Anything interesting to do in Rockford IL on Sunday
Going to Rockford IL for a job interview on Monday. Will be there Sunday. Anything interesting to do Sunday afternoon? Good place to have dinner? Thanks!

You might want to check to see if the Midway Village and Museum is open in April. It's located on Guilford Road just north of BR 20. Again, the Klenhm Arboretum & Botanical Gardens off South Main Street might be an option if open. Not being a Rockford native, I'm rather at a loss to come up with other options within the city limits. Mary's Market would be a wonderful dinner option if it's open Sunday evening. It's located on Business 20 (State Street) just west of Alpine Road on the left hand side of the street. Sorry that I can't be of more help... good luck on your interview!

cd, I didn't notice it was you asking about Rockford. Just my two cents, I spent a week there (in summer) several years ago and was very impressed. In fact, I thought I might like to live there. There was a nice bike/walking path along the river. Also, there are really lovely houses along the river. In the summer they had a water ski show on the river.
Good luck with the interview!

Hope you see this before leaving for Rockford... I checked and the Arboretum/Botanic Gardens (2701 Clifton Avenue)is open from 9-4 daily, admission $2. The Rockford Art Museum (711 North Main Street)is open Sunday from 12-5. I also came up with another restaurant idea.... Thunder Bay. It's located on State Street (BR 20)just west of I90. Although it's a chain (Do three or four restaurants nation wide make that a chain?) you can expect good ambience with a north woods decor. It has great salmon and I believe that I've had venison there. Mary's Market is more gourmet, but I know that Thunder Bay will be open Sunday night and it's probably closer to your overnight accommodation too.
Rockford is a town that's had its share of economic trouble, but it seems to be coming back. There are still bad sections of town which you can drive through if you stay on BR 20 west after leaving the central downtown area. The river area is lovely and there is a large theatre downtown that hosts a wide range of cultural events. The State Street area west of I90 is a four lane highway with hotels, shopping malls, and restaurants for several miles until it becomes more residential shortly after crossing Alpine until you get into the central downtown area. You can feel safe and confident in this part of town.

Stroll, power walk, jog, run, pedal, or skate!
Rock River Recreation Path: Built as the bicentennial community project in 1976, this is the "Grand Daddy" of the path system. You can begin your trek in downtown Rockford at Davis Park, cross the State Street Bridge (or the Jefferson Street Pedestrian Bridge adjacent to the Library) and continue north on Madison Street. The path winds behind the YMCA, through Sinnissippi Gardens, past Symbol, to meander through Shorewood and Martin Parks in Loves Park. Cross over the Riverside Boulevard Bridge, and continue north and through to the Sportscore. You just went the distance for a total of 7 miles! Whew! Now, you can turn around for the return trip to where you parked your car, or explore the Sportscore on the 3/4 mile paved path, or go further north .62 mile to Harlem Road and the Frank Bauer Toll Bridge (you don't owe a toll if you're on the path), and into Machesney Park, where the path continues north on Victory Lane to Machesney Road. The 2.2 mile path ends at the Burger King on North Second Street. Parking is available at any of the parks or at Machesney Park Mall.

Just returned from Rockford. I feel the interview went well and the 2mile walk by the river on crisp, sunny Sunday was exceptional. The victorian homes across the river are beautiful. Aunt Mary's for breakfast, lunch, or dinner is a notch above most restaurants, gourmet and not expensive. Thanks to everyone who gave us such good information.
