Anything Good to See or Do En Route from Dallas to Austin?
We are traveling to Austin, but our flight lands in Dallas and we have to drive from there to Austin. Does anyone have any recommendations for something good to see or do (or eat) on the road from Dallas to Austin? Thanks!

Salado Inn in Salado. Little over half way. Historic inn; an old stage coach stop. Very good food with some old stores and antiques nearby.

Meant Stagecoach Inn. Sorry - getting my inns mixed up. The Inn at Salado is more of a B&B.

Waco is about halfway between Dallas and Austin and has several interesting stops:
Texas Ranger Hall of Fame and Museum http://www.texasranger.org/ Armstrong Browning Library (on the campus of Baylor University – a must if you are a fan of Robert and Elizabeth Barrett Browning) http://www.browninglibrary.org/ Dr Pepper Museum http://www.drpeppermuseum.com/ All of these are easy to reach from I-35. You also might want to stop for kolaches (Czech pastries) in the town of West, north of Waco. There are several bakeries in town that sell them. The Czech Stop is right next to I-35 northbound, although people argue about whether theirs are the best. The town itself is located on the highway, so it is just a few blocks into the center of town to check out the other bakeries. |
George's Bar and Restaurant in Waco. Right off I-35, good burgers, fried catfish, etc. And you can never go wrong with kolaches - definitely get off in West, turn left under the interstate and go a few blocks to downtown for all the bakeries. No point asking anyone where the best are, everyone has their favorites. I like Old Village Bakery.

I also suggest Czech Stop (exit 353)-- where you will find a convenience store, gas pumps, etc. There's food in both stores there. Great pit stop and delicious things to eat. I personally love the puffs, which are basically a yeast roll ith things baked into them like cheese, sausage, sauerkraut, etc. What a treat.
