Anyone stayed at the Newark Hilton (Gateway)?
 

Thinking about staying at this hotel for convenience to New York City. Anyone know much about it?

There are better places to stay for convenience to NYC than Newark... will u have a car, how long are you staying for, and for what purpose is your trip?

Just making a single day trip into NYC while traveling from Vermont to Philadelphia by car. Don't want to drive into the city. Need a place where I can easily hop on a train in the morning and come out in the evening.

Just my 2 cents but I don't think that I wouldn't stay at the Gateway. Although it is next to Newark Penn Station, it is in a busy city. What about hotels in secaucus or Lyndhurst NJ? They are close to bus service and may even have shuttles. I think there is a Marriott on the Hudson River in Weehawken. <BR>patty

Here are some better choices (IMO) than staying in Newark (the train is close by, but not an area i'd want to be walking around in the evening).<BR><BR>Your most convenient choice would be Jersey City, there is a Double Tree Club Suites and a Courtyard by Marriott that are located right near the PATH train (into NYC) and also within walking distance to a ferry (great way to travel into NYC if weather is nice). There is also a new Hyatt right near these 2 properties as well, which i think is close to a ferry stop but i don't THINK is that close to the PATH train. (i don't think the Double Tree charges for parking, not sure about the other 2, but something to ask each hotel if/when you call)<BR><BR>The Rutherford/Lyndhurst/Secaucus area is a viable inexpensive option as well. There is frequent bus service from the hotels in this area into NYC (15 minute bus trip) or you could drive your car to a PATH train or Ferry if you wanted to get &quot;closer&quot;. The Sheraton Meadowlands in a nice option in this area (you can even call before you book to ask about the frequency of the bus schedule)<BR><BR>Both of these areas can be selected on Hotwire or Priceline if you can deal with the &quot;uncertainty&quot; of exactly which hotel you will get (but stick with the higher rated star hotels).<BR><BR>If you have any other questions about the area, feel free to ask. I highly recommend the Hyatt in jersey city, the view of NY does not get any better, restaurants are good in JC and hoboken...ferry and subway service to NYC..........much better than staying in Newark.

I've stayed there, and not at any of the other places recommended, so I can't comment on them.<BR><BR>We found the place convenient, and it's right across from the train station. We walked around on a Sunday AM looking for a local diner, with no luck, but were not afraid of the area IN DAYLIGHT. We'd taken a shuttle from Gateway to the Hilton Airport hotel at night, and don't think we'd venture too far from the hotel at night. Like others wrote - not much around at night, but we were over in NYC at night anyway, so it didn't matter.<BR>Thanks to others for their suggestions - I'm always looking for better ways to travel.<BR><BR>(this didn't seem to take the first time - I'm trying only once more - sorry if it gets posted twice)<BR>

Thank you all for the suggestions. Looks like Newark is out. I will check on the other hotels mentioned. Don't want to have to pay for parking if I can avoid it.
