I haven't stayed there but also found them when researching our last trip. (we ended up using a package due to cost so didn't rent a cottage at all.) We have stayed at Hanalei Colony resort several times and these cottages are close to HCR. If you look at the north shore map in Ultimate Kaua'i (pg 48 in the 4th edition) they would be just past mile marker 7. Right in that stretch there are only a couple of houses on the ocean side of the road, and the cottages are on the inland side of the road. When we were there I tried to check out exactly where they were without pulling into driveways and annoying anyone. I'm not certain but I beleive there is another house between the cottages and the road.
The beach there is beautiful but not a swimming area. Some people snorkel closer to HCR and also shore fish. My DH and I absolutely love this area. There is a feeling of seclusion; even though there are a fair number of houses the trees and plants provide a lot of screening. I love the wild feeling of the ocean and the wind up there. One bonus is that you are really close to popular areas like Ke'e and tunnels, so you can get up early and be the first person on the beach in the morning before the "crowds" arrive. It's about a 15 minute drive to Hanalei where there are several restaurants and shops.
For what it's worth, I think we will return to Ha'ena when we make our next trip to Kaua'i--we enjoyed Kapa'a but we LOVE Ha'ena. At that point, i would definitely consider staying at these cottages based on what i know of the area, the info and pictures on the website, and the phone conversation i had with the owner.
I just remembered another place to check. coconutpalace.net has trip reports and I think someone posted on there about one of the units.

I sent an enquiry about this location because I thought about staying there too (but have decided on the Sealodge Condos)...
here is the response:
Aloha Tammi, as of today both the Garden Cottage and Beach Bungalow are available for your travel dates. We ask for a 50% deposit by check and payment of balance on arrival is ok. We have a 45 day cancellation policy. Any cancellations prior to 45 days are fully refundable and cancellations within 45 days are fully refundable if we rebook the dates. The Garden Cottage is about 20 yards from our main residence with lush tropical decor around the cottage for privacy and the Beach Bungalow located behind the main beach house next to our property. The are only 4 residences in the area and no other homes for thousands of yards. Mahalo, Steve

Hi Chrissie -
Haven't stayed there yet but my husband and I have reserved the Garden Cottage in November. It looks great and I have had several email conversations with Steve, the owner, who is as nice as can be. The price and location seem superb. We love Haena and are really looking forward to the trip!

Hi - many thanks for the replies- Can I PLEASE ask kameha to let us know how they got on - I have extensively researched for a quiet cottage near a beach on the North Shore and these sound just too good to be true for the money !! Many thanks - Chrissie

I will happily give a report after our trip. I'm not worried about the accomodations. First of all, how much time do you really spend in the room? Location is important to me and this place is right in the area where I want to be. Luxury is not important. I have been fortunate, I guess, in that I have never had a bad experience renting a vacation place on-line and I've rented in many different locations. I took the advice of another poster and went to coconutpalace.com. There was a review of one of the other rooms that Steve rents out - the Teak room - and the review was great! I'll tell more after our return in November.

Hello Chrissie - Sorry I haven't reported yet. Work has been so crazy since my return. We LOVED the Garden Cottage! It was small, but fine for the two of us with a comfortable, king-sized bed, a small kitchen area, TV/VCR (which we never used) and a good-sized bathroom. It is set back on the property so there is privacy. You can't see the ocean, but you can hear it. The outdoor shower was so lovely! I totally recommend it and we would definetly stay there again. Steve and Joanna live in the main house and are not around very much, but accomodating if you need anything. They have a very funny, friendly bird that hangs out on their porch! The beach at this location was fine for sitting on in the evening, under the stars, but wasn't good for swimming - at least this time of year. Quite rough. There were some awesome kite surfers out everyday which were really fun to watch. The place is convenient to Hanalei as well as the best beaches - Tunnels and Ke'e. Snorkeled at both. Saw an incredible monk seal at Ke'e just swimming around. Have a fabulous time. If you need more detailed info - let me know.

We drove because we always had "stuff" with us - towels, snorkel gear, picnic basket, etc. Probably too far to walk to Tunnels and definetly too far to walk to Ke'e. By the way, we never saw the inside of the Beach Bungalow or the Teak Room but from the outside, I think the one we stayed in, The Garden Cottage, is the best. The Garden Cottage is a free standing unit and has more privacy. The teak room is in the lower part of the main house. The Beach Bungalow seems to be attached to the back of another house near the front of the road. You certainly can't see the beach from it.
