I stayed there a few years ago and it was one of my favorites. Pros...nice big rooms with couches - I believe all the Rio rooms are suites. The casino and bars were great, perfect for my age group 20's - 30's. Not a lot of families and kids like I encountered at Excalibur.
Cons...it was far from the other casinos but I think there is a walkway built now.

Megan's about right. We stayed there in Dec. Great midweek rate--two nights at $50 and one at $60. Also got three restaurant twofers. The Carnival buffet was large--its only saving grace. Can't remember the other we used, but I believe that was for breakfast.
We didn't mind the location. The rooms were great and well-worth the money. We drove into the strip when we wanted to go there. Getting around and parking was no problem because it was the week after the Rodeo finals. It's just before Christmas, and about the deadest week in Vegas.

meganoreilly sums it up correctly. We stayed there one time. Great rooms with a frig and coffee maker but the hassle of getting back and forth is not worth it to me. I would look for a good deal on the strip and visit the Rio. In July you should be able to get a deal just about anywhere. Some hotels honor AAA as well.

Hi,we stayed at the Rio a couple of years ago when our travel agent got us a great package and we loved it. We went back 2 more times.
The rooms are very nice, we would ask for a high floor, strip view. There are plenty of restaurants for any taste, the seafood buffet always had a very long line. We ate at Napa, Buzios, and the cafe in the mornings. All were very good.
There are a couple or three pools, one with a sand beach.
Internet use at the business center is pricey-10 minutes-$10.00.
The shuttle comes around about every 20-30 minutes and takes you to the Strip.
We did very well on the slots. Try the Flaming Sevens. I won a Progressive Jackpot on my birthday
Only con would be that the hotel is not on the Strip.

Just got back from the Rio - as other posters profess, - nice, good size rooms and generally an interesting place to experience and the pool area is pretty neat. July would likely be a great time to expereince it. The Rio is an interesting place to experience, but it is not necessary to do so by actually staying there. I would not recommend it unless your objectives are consistent with what it provides - all-inclusive, with limited and awkward access to other LV strip venues. (Bally's basic rooms are similar in size, albeit not "suites", yet are located at strip "grounbd zero"). The Gold Coast or Palms are somewhat near the Rio as alternates to the strip shuttle - which runs from the Rio to Harrah's, until 1am.
If you are a first-time LV visitor, I would recommend you look into alternate sites located on the strip. Not knowing your exact desires, you might research the Mirage, Monte Carlo, Treasure Island or Aladdin. With the exception of perhaps the Mirage, all are, cost wise, comparable to the Rio, and provide some nightlife, good rooms, good restaurants and favorable strip locations. Also check out Cheapovegas.com for useful LV hotel and casino information...
