Dine first - no admission - enter museum after 7 and just pay for additional drinks then

For Wed -- I'm gonna stay downtown - otherwise I'd say -- have a walk through the park and then head to a West side restaurant

ET - I'm still in for Wed. I liked the idea of a walk in the park (weather permitting) and dinner. But I'm up for anything. It should be visiters' choice. What are you doing earlier? I forgot what area you're staying in.

For what it's worth - a few months ago I had dinner at this place early on a weekday night -- http://www.pashanewyork.com/

There was a group of retired? NY academics having a dinner in the corner and it struck me as a great place for a group meal -- They had an early bird price fixe that was advertised outside ( but doesnt seem to be on the website) but it also could be a great place to share appetizers etc.

Hi, all!

Here's the updated list:

Wednesday, 6th May:

Place unknown
Time unknown

CentralPark Girl
SueNYC
ekscrunchy

Friday, 8th May

Morgan Library
5:30pm

Laurie
jenskar2

I have two others who have not committed to either day, bspielman and editor Katie.

Can I please get a headcount, so we will know how many seats to reserve?

Centralparkgirl: believe it or not I have no idea where we'll be staying. I've left making the hotel reservations to others. Hope they haven't forgotten me! I usually try to stay in either Upper East Side for the museums or Upper West Side for Lincoln Center. But anywhere reachable by metro is fine by me.

Wednesday is a free day, as is Friday. I was thinking of going to some of the museums in my spare time. There's always so much to see at the Met and at the Natural History and, since reading RELIC and its sequels, the Natural History Museum is going to be irresistible.

A walk in the park before dinner sounds like a terrific idea! Let's do it!

Believe things are coming together very well. I look forward to meeting everyone!

And please keep the ideas coming!

Dont count on me Wed -- I may still end up downtown at the Museum of American Finance and The Museum of Jewish History.

Re Rubin - I know its open late on Wed but didn't know it was free then as well - I doubt it.

The two I am going to are free on Wednesdays and I'm going to a synagogue/gallery on LES before them

Friday works, too, but not both. Can we come to a consensus on one day?

Sorry, I've had to go out of town again. Been to LA three thimes in one month - feels like work again!

On the concensus of which day, let's make it Wednesday, since both Laurie and jenskar said that they prefer Friday but Wednesday is OK by both of them.

Here's the updated list:

bspielman (2)
CentralPark Girl(1)
ekscrunchy (1)
Laurie (1)
jenskar2 (1)
SueNYC (maybe) (1)

Place: unknown
Time: 5:30pm on

ekscrunchy, on the other forum, said she found a good restaurant in Chinatown. However, I'm open to anything else, (especially Italian - hint! hint!).

Wednesday it is, then.

Italian: Northern? Southern? Pizza?

Budget? Neighborhood/Location?

No pizza please (see weight watcher thread). Any other Italian is fine by me.

Casting about for some moderately-priced Italians. Best to look for places that offer prix-fixe dinner menus, I'm thinking.

Among them:
Cibo (767 2nd Avenue at 41st) http://cibonyc.com $35
Luca (1712 1st Avenue betw 88-89) $23
Maria Pia (319W51 betw 8-9) www.mariapianyc.com $23
Osteria del Circo (120W55 betw 6-7) www.osteriadelcirco.com $35

I've made an OpenTable reservation (cancelable/changeable) at Maria Pia for May 6 at 5:30, a party of 6, the largest OT will allow. I figure I can call the restaurant to obtain a larger table for 8 of us if necessary (so, please confirm again here). I've also noted on the resso that we're not headed to the theater, in hopes they won't rush us out. We've been there once, quite some time ago; not bad for a theater district place.

Nice choice, bspielman! Looks very inviting from the pictures!

I'm in, unless someone strongly objects - like being allergic to cheese!

Here's the next-to-final updated list:

Place: Mari Pia
319 W 51st St (betw 8th and 8th Ave), New York
212-765-6463

Time: 5:30pm on

Fodorites:

bspielman (2)
CentralPark Girl(1)
easytraveler (1)
ekscrunchy (1)
Katie (maybe) (2)
Laurie (1)
jenskar2 (1)
SueNYC (maybe) (1)

Katie hasn't checked in yet. If she does, we may need a table for ten. Will the restaurant accommodate ten? It looks like they can put several tables together to accommodate a larger group. Love the way the wines are hung on the walls!

Sounds great.

bspielman - when did you last eat at Luca? What's their prix fixe like? I haven't eaten there in a long time and I don't live too far.

Re Luca,

Not in a very long time; thus, I can't comment on their current prix fixe. They don't have their own website any more, which may not be a good sign.

And, BTW, listening as I type this to the live broadcast of Götterdämmerung from the Met. Getting psyched for the whole Ring in two weeks. What glorious music!

Not a bad Don Giovanni last night at the Met: good voices; dreadful production; Sam Ramey's 25th anniversary at the Met, acknowledged on stage between acts. Peter Mattei sang Don to Ramey's Leporello. Mozart's "Hit Parade."

Oh, and lastly, Café Fiorello, across Broadway from Lincoln Center, now has a $35 three-course prix-fixe. You can substitute a glass of wine for dessert if you like. We did, but we shared a dessert and had a couple of double espressos. The bill before tip, but including tax, was under $100.

bspielman: you sound like a real opera buff! It IS such glorious music! All that emotion delivered by that most perfect musical instrument: the human voice!

Sam Ramey is getting up there in age. His voice must still be great, tho. I'll never forget his Faust at the SF Opera years ago, so powerful!

Thanks for the tip on Cafe Fiorello's prix-fixe!

Any other Fodorites in New York free on Wednesday night? Please join us, if you can! Should be fun!

Opera buff? Well, I suppose so. I've been a Met subscriber for over 40 years, the last 26 with my wife. And we've seen and heard great opera (and some not so great!) in opera houses during vacations in London, Hamburg, Berlin and Paris. I guess you could say we're hooked.

This will be our fourth full Ring Cycle. People ask whether, after "enduring" twenty hours of opera in a single week, we're exhausted. I always answer, truthfully, that we leave Götterdämmerung wanting more! Yesterday's finale, even on the radio, was spectacular and the ovations were deafening.

Samuel Ramey's voice has become more tremulous with age, but, on Friday, he managed to keep the vibrato under control for the most part. A good comic Leporello in what I think is my favorite opera.

Looking forward to meeting all who can make it on Wednesday, the 6th. Please continue to post head counts until the last possible moment so that I can advise the restaurant of our plans.

This will also be my fourth Ring cycle. The other three were all on the West Coast, so I'm looking forward to the NY one!

I will definitely keep updating. Will be leaving midweek next week so may not always be near a computer, but will update as much as possible.

Please, everyone who has indicated an interest, please check in and help us firm up the headcount. Muchos thanks!
