Anyone heard of Frutti di Mari restaurant in NYC ?

Hi!
Reading a hotel write up in Tripadviser I came across a great recommendation for the Frutti di Mari restaurant in NYC but there was no address!
Anyone any idea of where it is?
Thanks
Welshgirl

Frutti di Mari is a seafood dish. Are you sure it is a restaurant? :)

Hi Welshgirl - I did a quick search on citysearch.com and came up with:

Frutti di Mare
84 E. 4th St
212 979-2034

I've never eaten there so I can't offer much more - it is in a cool neighborhood, though.

It is in the east village- 4th steet off of 2nd avenue. It is inexpensive italian- not bad but not great either. Better italian in the area is "poetessa" on 2nd ave between 5th & 6th street, or "3 of cups" on 1st ave & 5th street. Hope this helps.

Thanks for the replies.
The early bird special between 5.00 and 6.30pm seemed too good a deal to miss ( around $11 ).
If I try this restaurant or one of the ones that Shabbychic recommended I' let you know.
Thanks again.

We just had dinner last night at Lavagna which is a short walk from Frutti di Mare. Lavagna was excellent and they also have a nice early dining fixed price menu - $25 for 3 courses. We had a late dinner so couldn't take advantage of it, but it was very good Italian food. I would go back!

Welshgirl, I understand that you are on a budget but try and remember that NYC isn't an inexpensive city even where the deals are. If you try and scrimp too much, you may end up getting what you pay for.

How about eating late lunches at really fantastic restaurants and then chowing down on a hotdog for dinner?

Try and stick to downtown ethnic restaurants for the best bang for your buck.

With entree's under $10, attractive presentation, attentive service, this is one of my favorite restaurants in NYC. I have always enjoyed my meals there. The portions are reasonable, the food always tasted fresh, and always tasty.

The "you get what you pay for" crowd is also frequently the one that dramatically overpays for ordinary food.

If you look around there are many such gems in New York where you can indeed eat both well and inexpensively.

Lavagna!

It's one of my favorite restaurants in New York. The rigatoni is amazing!

Futti Di Mari is one of my favorite places in NYC. I love the cream of carrot soup! And the Creme Brulle is out of this world. I agree with NYCjeff. The "get what you pay for" crowd definatly overpays for mediocor food. But I would like to know where Lavagna is and a little more about it and any other quaint little places in the neighborhood

There are a couple of places around that neighborhood that are quite similar -- We've eaten at Cucina Italiana (I think) which is across the street. They are CASH ONLY so visit the ATM before you go. You can have a very good meal in these places for half the price elsewhere.
