Anyone ever stayed in Corte Madera, N of San Francisco?

We'll be driving in and want to visit SF for a few days. Since we'll have our car anyway, I don't feel a need to stay in the more touristly areas and spend so much on lodging. We're two adults and three kids, so getting a 2 bedroom place is a must for us. Atmosphere is not a big deal to us - clean, safe and a swimming pool are! Corte Madera is about 9 miles north of the city. Is it an OK area? Would one drive to the north side of the bay and ferry across to see the sights? Any suggestions would be appreciated!

Corte Madera is an upscale Marin County town (suburban atmosphere) It's certainly an OK area.

And it has a ferry that will take you to the San Francisco waterfront, in walking distance of all the attractions (at leat for me--but I love walking from Fisherman's Wharf to Golden Gate Park).

There is a nice courtyard by Marriott next to Larkspur ferry landing in Marin. Easy trip into the city.
However, consider staying in the City, the atmosphere of SF can not be duplicated in any suburban location. It is one of a kind.

Plenty of places to go in Marin Co. Check out the Frank Loyd Wright designed Civic Center (think Jetsons) in San Rafael or spend the afternoon in Sausalito with lot's of cool shops and restaraunts. Check out the SF Bay model which is a huge impressive model of the SF Bay and gives you a good geographic idea of the communities around the Bay. You are also a short drive to the wine growing regions of the Napa and Sonoma Valley's. Marine World Africa USA theme park is also a short drive from Corte Madera and the kid's would totally love it and so will you. Golden Gate National Seashore, Stinson Beach and Muir Woods on Mt. Tamalpais all make great half day trips.

When you drive into the city, after you cross the Golden Gate Bridge, take the first exit to the Vista Point, park and take a walk to the center of the famous span. If your lucky the weather will cooperate and you will be rewarded.
Also located in the area below the Golden Gate is Fort Point, but drive don't walk there from the bridge parking area. Fort Point is a great place to take the kid's to explore and the view is also one of a kind.

When you drive to the city it's a good idea to take public transportation to get around. BART (train), MUNI (buses and trolley's) and Cable Car's are the way for everyone to see the city without all the parking and driving hassle. MUNI now run's the F line that go's from Fishermans Wharf along the waterfront to Market Street on historic Trolley's. A great trip for only $1.00. What more can you ask for...
