Anyone EVER Stayed in a Really Nice Days Inn?

The times friends and I have tried them, they were dismal. I wonder if we've just had exceptionally bad luck, hitting the odd bad one, or whether other people have had this experience?

Webster Jun 24th, 2002 11:18 AM

"Really Nice Days Inn" is an Oxymoron!

Lou Jun 24th, 2002 11:18 AM

"Really nice" and "Days Inn" are mutually exclusive. They are opposite by design. Diametrically opposed.

Not that they are bad, they serve their nitche well, but that nitche has nothing to do with "really nice".

lisa Jun 24th, 2002 11:19 AM

Not quite a Days Inn, but this past Friday nite we stayed at a Best Western in Carlsbad NM that was a treat. The room was HUGE, the king size bed was comfy, the pillows fluffy, and the bathroom area was large. And for $59.00 (Govt rate). Next door was the "No Whiners Diner" which was another treat. An old fashioned kind of diner with good food and excellent service.

Days Inn is my least favorite hotel chain. The last time I stayed at one, there was a mouse in my room. I went to the front desk and told them and their response was, "We'll put a trap in the room." Gee, certainly having a dead mouse will be so much better than a live one. I wrote to Days Inn HQ and their only response was that they had decided to rescind that property's accredidation with Days Inn after receiving numerous complaints like mine.

Lynn Jun 24th, 2002 11:28 AM

The Days Inns I've stayed in were all the same: it was a decent, no-frills, clean room with a bed, a shower, and a television--a place to rest and clean up in while on a long road trip.

The only exception was a Days Inn we stayed at in Columbus, near Ohio State University, two years ago--what a dump! You could tell it had once been a lousy little motel that the Days Inn folks had just slapped a (thin) coat of paint on and put their name up on it. But by and large, they're all the same--not somewhere you'd go if you were on a nice vacation, that's for sure!
Worst hotel I've ever stayed at was a Days Inn across the street from the Peabody in Memphis, TN.

The washcloths had this gray/black look to them. Somehow they became white AFTER you used them. I still feel gross thinking about it.

Bed was bad, it was noisy, and the people at the front desk were much more enthused about talking to one another and having a good time than helping me.

Luckily, the last time I was through Memphis, I noticed that it is no longer a Days Inn....hopefully, things have gotten better.

Stayed in one somewhere in Arizona a few years back and it was awful. Looked at two different rooms and ended up driving further down the expressway to find another place to sleep.

HAH Jun 24th, 2002 11:55 AM

LOL. The title of this post alone is halarious! You get what you pay for so don't expect marble counters in the bathroom and 350 thread count sheets on the bed.

a Jun 24th, 2002 11:58 AM

I cannot tell you how much they would have to pay me to expect vermin in my room.

Polly Jun 24th, 2002 12:04 PM

OK...maybe not 350 count sheets (I have had 200 and less at 5 star hotels), but marble baths and other amenities unusual for Days Inn (or for that matter, for any roadside accommodations) are to be found at their WON-derful facility in Victoria on Vancouver Island. I was astonished! As nice a room as I have stayed in anyplace except for resort type and 'name' places. Please don't laugh at me unless you have been there and seen the place.

Sure have - Days Inn in Savannah, Ga. - 210 West Bay Street - 1-800-325-2525. Convenient to the Historic Center - good parking - large suite complete with kichen - very nice desk - $70 per night. Have stayed here several times since the later 1990s, and never a complaint.

Bruth Jun 24th, 2002 01:38 PM

Nothing will kill a thread quicker than shameless self promotion there Rolly.

Now bend over!

mona Jun 24th, 2002 03:15 PM

We've stayed twice at a Days Inn in Oklahoma City that was quite decent. By which I mean, it was clean and sanitary, and the pool was warm. Perfectly adequate for what we paid.
M. Jun 24th, 2002 05:29 PM

Really Nice? No.

paul Jun 24th, 2002 07:08 PM

Actually, I have stayed at a number of Days Inn and found them to be fine. The Days Inn at the Denver Airport is a no frills, clean and affordable motel as is the one in Grand Junction Colorado. My wife just stayed in one in Oklahoma City and said it was just fine. We have also stayed at various Best Westerns, Ramadas, Comfort Inns, etc and they are about the same as the Days Inn. You don't pay much and you don't get much but they are generally clean and nice for a night or two.

Howard Jun 24th, 2002 08:29 PM

I find Hampton Inns and Comfort Inns to be a notch above Days Inn for about the same money!

Alan Jun 24th, 2002 09:04 PM

We THOUGHT we had found a decent Day's Inn at Tucson, and after a great night's sleep we were ready to tell everyone that the bad publicity Day's Inn gets was totally unjustified. Then we made our mistake. The morning we checked out we asked them to look after our bags while we did some sightseeing... at that time we hadn't settled the account. When we returned in the afternoon, they refused to accept the agreed-on rate which we had been quoted by Travelocity and which we had shown them, without comment, at check-in. The boss refused to speak to us, relaying his instructions from his office to the desk clerk, and proceeded to blame, first, us, then Travelocity, then the computer system. But the desk clerk remained adamant....we'd have to pay more than the booking sheet said. Finally, since we had a bus to catch, we gave in.... and our emails to Travelocity never got a reply. So we have sworn off Day's Inn (like many other people!)

Days Inn Deadwood Gulch Resort in Deadwood, SD is the best Days Inn I've ever stayed in. Great place!

joesorce Jun 24th, 2002 10:26 PM

We've found Best Western to have just about the best quality standards of the mid-range chains.

The Days Inn that we stayed in, in Rockland Massachusetts, was very, very nice.

I don't think it is still a member of the Days Inn chain however. Probably exceeded the Days Inn standards and was booted out of the system.

Allie Jun 25th, 2002 05:04 AM

I agree with Howard's statement, though they do vary in quality from awful to comfortable. Proportionally, I've stayed at more poor Day's Inns than other hotels in their catagory.
Alan, Though it's a hassle, I wouldn't allow that hotel to get away with what they did. Write directly to the corporate office and tell them what you told us, and ask for a free night or your money back! And alert the BBB!

Ed Jun 25th, 2002 05:43 AM

Morehead City, NC Days Inn was outstanding. Beautiful 2 level room, with mini-fridge and microwave. Good breakfast, lovely property overlooking a wildlife area. More pricey than most, unless you get the Rock-bottom rate, which we did.

The Days Inn at Breezewood PA is also very nice, at a good price. It's in the middle of nowhere at a truck stop, so it's best for a late arrival early departure.

These two stand out because the rest of the Day's Inns we've stayed at were very definitely sub-par. (At Pittsburgh they had king beds, but no king sheets!)

There is much better value available at other chains. Using the coupons in the brochures available at the highway rest stops provides good deals.

Alan Jun 25th, 2002 06:03 AM

Allie, thanks for that advice.... and what's the BBB?

Allie Jun 25th, 2002 08:46 AM

Hi again!
Better Business Bureau - though perhaps it has different initials?
My husband and I have found that many of these hotels are actually owned and run by individuals, hence the vast difference in quality. But I'll bet{should hope!} that the company will take note of your unfortunate experience- at least we've been successful in the one time we actually took a complaint directly to a head office. Good luck!

Larry Jun 25th, 2002 08:54 AM

The Days Inn in Branson, Missouri is top-notch with clean, comfortable rooms and reasonable rates.

traveler Jun 25th, 2002 08:58 AM

I will never stay at a Days Inn again after our experience at the Days Inn in Melrose Park, Illinois. It is a suburb of Chicago. We checked in to the desk clerks laughing and joking, hardly professional. WE arrived in our room to find grease all over the bathroom sink, and grease all over the towels. Apparently their maitanance person had decided to "clean up" in our room and leave the dirty towels. On top of that there was an Adult bookstore next door, and a strip joint across the street. We had been assured by the Days Inn staff that it was located in a very good neighborhood, appropriate for a family with small kids. Also had bad luck at a Days Inn in Joliet. I will always choose Comfort Inn or Hampton Inn for a no frills motel.

The only good thing is that we immediately went to the desk and asked for our money back, and checked out. We were not charged for the room, and drove several blocks north on Mannhiem Road to a HAmpton Inn. Also had bad luck at a Days Inn in Joliet. I will always choose Comfort Inn or Hampton Inn for a no frills motel.

We had to kill a day after cruise, so we stayed at Days Inn airport north since we had a 6 am flight. The place was such a pit...smoke, smoke everywhere- ashtrays in the hall! Sure, the Days Inn in Savannah on Bay Street.

Oh, Bruth, nothing kills a thread like an ugly, nasty little moron with unnatural images and desires, like you. Get some treatment, and also talk with your parents about what happened.

We stayed in the Imlay City, MI Days Inn this past holiday weekend (visiting family whose house was overcrowded). Our online reservation for a double room had gotten lost sometime after they acknowledged it, so they resolved the matter and upgraded us to a business suite before we even arrived. The suite (and the hotel in general) was very clean and modern, did not smell of smoke, and the continental breakfast included homemade breads from the local bakery as well as the standard cereals and bagels. I'd give it an "adequate-plus" rating.

Randa Jul 8th, 2002 04:55 AM

The Days Inn we stayed at in Blowing Rock, NC was rated as a "5 Sunburst" motel - their best. Well let me tell you, their "best" would rate no more than an "average", if that, by any comparable motel's standards. Also, it was advertised as being newly renovated. If it was, I'd sure hated to have seen it before!
