Any surfing spots around Miami or Ft. Lauderdale

My son is coming to the Dade-Ft. Lauderdale area and loves surfing. He's tried a couple of websites that talk about surf but is still having trouble getting helpful information to help him enjoy his visit to Miami. Anyone know where he should head for the waves? We stay in Aventura but he will gladly travel around the area for his passion. Thanks Fodorites!

If your son is looking for waves like they have on the west coast, he's going to be disappointed. The surf in that area simply is not much unless there is a storm out to sea.

Cocoa, Melbourne, Indiatlantic are your east coast surf spots. Pray for a storm or he'll likely be body surfing.

It depends a lot on what time of year he will be there. Springtime will give him a fair shot at getting some waves if he doesn't mind driving. It is very very rare to have any rideable surf in the Broward/Dade/Palm Beach area. He'll need to head north to the Delray pier, Spanish River Beach in Boca Raton, or the Lake Worth pier. Sebastian Inlet would be his best bet, but the locals there are not always very friendly.

If he's visiting in the summer, there won't be any decent waves anywhere on the East Coast unless there's a hurricane out in the Atlantic or some freak weather system nearby.

Direct him to surfinfo.com and surfline.com for more information.

Bathtub Reef, out on the southern tip of Hutchinson Island, in Martin County sometimes has decent surf....but his best bet would be Sebastian or Cocoa Beach...
