Any shopping/restaurant ideas in Gulfport/Biloxi
We're driving over to Gulfport/Biloxi area tomorrow morning for a night away. Staying at the Grand Casino so my husband can play golf at Grand Bear. Any shopping opportunities and restaurant ideas? We're not big casino people. Thanks.

Absolutely loved Mary Mahoney's across from the Beau Rivage in Biloxi. It's a restaurant with two levels of service.
The front building is great for breakfast and lunch, and the rear buildings are fine dining.
The whole complex was there when the area still belonged to the French, before the Louisana Purchase.
If you are in the area, don't blink because you may miss the sign. We doubled back to go there a second day.
Food is rather like New Orleans, but IMHO better as it is not as elaborate in presentation. Folks were terrific there as well. Jefferson Davis' home which became a Veterans' retirement location is also very interesting to tour in Biloxi.

Only that I wish I had had at least 2 more days in that area. I found the people were delightful. It was end of March and there were very few tourists around, so we had a lot of contact with locals and people on the military bases.
We had the most knowledgable docent that I think we ever came across at Jefferson Davis' home. My guy is an old fading military AND an engineer, so we got the "under the house" look at how the entire thing was built (stilted as the gulf washes "under" it) for hurricanes and why it is still there. Plus we went to the NEW Veteran's home as well. It is being phased out. And all the cemetaries, and to the tomb of the Unknown Confederate Soldier.
If you hang around Mary Mahoney's in the morning and walk around the original cobblestone behind that WAS the street, and don't rush- you may get some of the real local flavor as it is a hang out, IMHO, for some of the old family locals.
We went to many small Southern towns on this trip inland throughout MS & AL and didn't have as much time at Gulfport as I had originally planned. But I would return to Biloxi in a second.
Much construction is occurring and just a few blocks inland whole new streets are being plotted and much is being razed. I have a feeling that a whole new town is going to be born soon.
And the beach is wide and fine for walking. Plus there's lots of parking available both near the beach and throughout the area.
Many, many choices for lodging. I hardly gambled at all and I still get a free stay comp from them (Beau Rivage) every month or two. I've never used it.
