Tom is right about his route being more scenic but I think it will add more miles to your trip. If I was you, I'd get on Google Maps and check the miles.

Paula - have driven them all - and gong out I-8 you are traveling at 70+ mph for 2/3 of the distance - until you hit the turnoff. :)

Looks like this rather "back roads" option adds roughly an hour compared to more direct routes suggested. Now that we have all the info, we can wait and see how we feel once we actually get to San Diego.
