FYI-Cedar Point is now giving you an assigned time to ride the new millenium to cut down on the lines. I worked there when I was in college and the best time to go is early spring (before Memorial Day) or the weekends after Labor Day. The week going into Labor Day is also slow because school is back for a lot of kids. Check the weather before you venture there though. They will not run the Millenium and some of the other rides in high wind or rain because of safety concerns.

For sheer terror with no cheesy amusement park animals and trees, try the coaster at Buffalo Bills on the CA/NV border. There's nothing but you, the car and the rail! It's a blast!

We've been to Cedar Point twice this year (we go every year) ... and we love it! We're thinking of going again before school starts, but with a family of four the bucks start to add up. On busy days they DO give out the line hopper tickets for Millenium Force. We stood in line for only 1/2 hour last time we went. We went back later when the line was opened up to everyone, and it was a 2.5 hour wait. Yikes! The longest line we stood in was for the Power Tower at 40 minutes. With everyone standing in line for the newest, most popular rides, it's easy to get on the others easily. We only stood in line for the Raptor (which is STILL my favorite) for 30 minutes.

They said on the radio today that they're extending the regular hours of CP for a few extra weeks due to the popularity of the Millenium Force. Before you make plans, make sure to check CP's operating schedule. You may end up like Chevy Chase when he went to Wally World with his family.

Hello, everyone. I noticed my old thread has resurfaced. I'm still planning to go to Cedar Point the first weekend in October. I'm praying for decent weather. What is the Power Tower? Thanks!

Hi Sandi-

Just a thought, Next year you might want to check out Knobel's Grove and Hershey Park both in Pennsylvania. They both have GREAT coasters and are not as crowded as some of the big commercial parks.

Just thought that you would like to know that there is a regional get together of the American Coaster Enthusiasts club at 6 Flags Great America in Gurnee IL, on Friday & Saturday 25 & 26 AUG2000.

Sandi-The Power Tower is that thing that goes up and drops you-like free falling. When I worked there they just openned the Demon Drop, a smaller version.

Hope you get good weather. If it rains they will shut down the coasters because the brakes get wet and sometimes the cars slide through where they are supposed to stop. And if it is windy, it effects the tall coasters. That wind off of Lake Erie can be brutal. October is iffy, take warm clothes.

Hi ....

The best rollercoaster I have been on was in Morecambe, England ... old wooden on, that you rode backwards on !!

WOW ...

Also Blackpool has one that drops at 82 degrees from a great height.

Also try Alton Towers ....

The best wooden coasters are at Kings Island in Cincinnati. If you have the time, the ultimate roller coaster trip is Cedar Point for 2 days, then hop on I-75 down to Cincy for a day at Kings Island. The Beast and The Son of Beast are the greatest (I prefer wooden coasters).

It's much warmer in Cincinnati in October. That first hill on the Millennium Force is scary enough, I can't imagine it with a strong, cold northerly wind blowing.

As a matter of fact I'm going to Cedar Point tomorrow. (cant wait!) The Power Tower is a ride like the Big Shot in Vegas. It shoots you straight up, (I don't know how many feet?) then you drop down. I know it's a pretty tall ride.. I agree with the above poster, I prefer the wooden coasters instead of the steel. The best coaster is The Beast at Kings Island!!! I like that more than the Magnum at Cedar Point. Cedar Point does have a nice wooden coaster called the Mean Streak.. I like that ride too..
Have Fun!!

The Beast at King's Island is amazing. They also have a stand-up one that is wonderful!

Hi,

having grown up in Erie PA, I have been to Cedar Point many times. It is GREAT. They don't call it the Roller Coast for nothin'... however, if the lines dissuade you, there is always Geagua Lake which is maybe an hour away from that - surprised no one mentioned it. another Lake Side amusement park.

but CP is still the best...

Beth, Geauga Lake is now Six Flags Cleveland, and it is better than ever! It's also less than an hour to downtown Cleveland, home of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame! And if you can get tickets, there's nothing like seeing a Tribe game at gorgeous Jacobs Field!

Cedar Point is the best--be sure to ride Millenium Force. It goes over 90 MPH. And no, that's not a typo.

Arrive early--they usually open up Millenium Force before the rest of the park. You can usually get on in 1/2 hour if you are willing to wait out front for an additional 1/2 hours. Or, better yet, use the Marina entrance--it's much closer to the entrance to Millenium Force and you'll avoid the front entrance sprint.

But if you do go on in the morning and end up in the front seat, be aware that you will definitely get bugs plastered into your face--so don't wear any makeup or be prepared to wash it all off after the ride! But hey, it is definitely worth it! (we rode it 3 different times, worth the wait even if you have to wait for 3 hours or more).

Thanks to EVERYONE for replying on this question. It has been great fun reading all of your opinions and advice. This will be my first major "road trip" just for the sake of searching out roller coasters. I think I will have to plan more in the future. My only concern right now is the possibility of bad weather. The line thing doesn't worry me too much, it shouldn't be too crowded in October from what I understand. I'll just have to wait and see what happens. Thanks again!

Hi there,

If you are a coaster enthusiast as I am, Cedar Point in Sandusky Ohio is definately the place to go. I go each year, and I am never dissapointed. This year they added the new Millenium Force which has broken all the records for tallest, fastest, steepest coaster, it has a 300 foot drop 80 degrees down!! The other coasters are just as great. I highly recommend taking a trip there, you will not be dissapointed at all. Have lots of fun!!!!

For absolutely wild - try the CYCLONE at Coney Island in New York City. We found it scarier than the Six Flags or Busch Gardens stuff, since it was old and rickety and gave the impression it was going to throw you off the track at any moment. WILD!

Cedar Point rules, thats all I gotta say you've read the rest of the posts havent you?
Just do NOT go on those idiotic water rides unless its 100 degrees out. They are like taking a bath with your clothes on. I went here when it started raining like Hell, and I was on the Octopus when it happened, I got soaked by the Lake Cloudbursts..yuck. Then without knowing about the water rides, we said, oh hell we're already soaked lets do the water rides! Big Mistake. I got so cold and wet that I got sick and missed out on Raptor, Millenium Force and a lot of other rides. Least I did Magnum. I hope to return here someday and get my revenge! ;-)

Sandi - Cedar Point is THE PLACE to go! Be advised that they have reduced hours after Labor Day and are only oprn on weekends: 6pm - midnight on fridays, noon - midnight on saturday and noon - 8pm on sunday. The rates are reduced from $39 to $34. I went to the Ohio Touism site and ordered an info pack, which came with coupons for another $10 off. Why don't you go to cedarpoint.com for the latest info. They had problems with the Millenium Force ride a couple weeks ago.
