Any restaurant recommendations in Pittsburgh near CMU?
My son and I will be visiting Carnegie Mellon soon, and we will be taking a few students out to dinner. Does any one have any recommendations of restaurants somewhat in the vicinity that is good, casual, and not too expensive.
Thanks.
Thanks.

Been a while since I was in P-Burgh, but I'd head over to either Shadyside or Squirrel Hill. Both are only a mile or two from campus.
There a lots of good restaurants in both areas. Or, head down to Oakland from fries and dogs at the O's and a sandwich at Primanti's.

There are several within walking distance of CMU. Walk down Forbes Avenue until you reach the intersect of Forbes and Craig Street (on corner of Carnegie Museum). I've been to a few. One is Star of India, Second Union Grill (nice sandwich platters) with some beer or liquors. There is also an Italian restaurant and Ali Baba (middle eastern of course), seen them but never sampled the food.

One of my favorites in the area is a very casual noodle house on Craig St. I think it's something like Lu Lu's noodles. Again, it's very casual but yummy.
If you venture into the Strip District, Kaya can't be beat.

As another CMU grad, I third the idea of Craig Street. It is an easy walk from campus and there is a high density of great restaurants on a two-block stretch. Ali Baba's, Star of India, Cafe Azure (not sure if thats the name), and several more. Good, casual, and not too expensive.

HI:
Craig Street is a good suggestion. I really like Lulu's for noodles and the Union Grill has a nice pub-like collegiate feel and good, not too fancy food. Not too far away and a neat Pittsburgh place is the Church Brew Works in Bloomfield. Tessaro's in Bloomfield is also good. Any of these places fit your cirteria. For breakfast go to Pamela's either on forbes in Oakland or on Walnut St. in Shadyside.

The Italian restaurant near CMU is Il Valetto. It's very, very small, but the food is very good. It's a BYOB too. Maybe won't be an option for you and your sons, but maybe others reading. The restaurant is on the walk toward Craig St. (across from Exxon). Also Mad Mex, and Spice Island in Oakland would be inexpensive and fun.

I have a son at CMU and when I last visited we went to Pamela's and was not at all impressed. It was a regular breakfast place but didn't see or taste anything special. What was I supposed to get there that makes Pamela's worthy of such high praise on Fodor's?
Also, does anyone know a great breakfast besides Pamela's?
