Any Recommendations? SF January Dine About Town
 

We're always interested in trying out restaurants in SF and the "Dine About Town" offers a really good opportunity to sample restaurants without breaking the bank while saying "What a ghastly experience!"

Here's the list for this years DAT:

If you were to go this year, which would be the top 5/10 you would recommend? We try to do a lunch and a dinner in one day to save having to drive up to the City twice.

Some places I'm usually pleased with and would suggest are: Absinthe, Plouf, Campton Place, Chapeau and Vicoletto. Try supperclub for something a little different from the norm. Have never had "a ghastly experience" at any.

bluestar: thanks for your recommendations. Except for Vicoletto, we've dined at all the other restaurants. My recollection is that Campton Place was especially fine.

Will try Vicoletto this time.

Do you have any others to add to your excellent recommendations?

Another vote for Chapeau and Campton Place. Did not care for La Mar.

Skool is one of our favorites (also Chapeau - but you've been there). We're going to Skool in 2 weeks with friends. Didn't know they were on DAT.

I know you've dined at E Tutto Qua because I sat next to you at the Fodors GTG there.

I remember that GTG very well, sitting by you and across from Mr and Mrs Elberko. Been back to E Tutto Qua a couple of times but there are so many good restaurants to try in San Francisco.

There are so many on this year's list that are in the Financial District - what gives?


Just had a wonderful lunch and dinner yesterday at two "unknowns" in SF:

Y & Y Cafe, Vietnamese, out by 10th on Clement. Piping hot bowl of noodles on a cold day!

Nob Hill Cafe - small, unpretentious local Italian restaurant - solid Italian food

Isa was one of our very favorites when the "former" chef/owner/husband-wife team owned it. They were Asian (still are) & he was trained by Roland Passot (La Folie). We went there several times for New Year's Eve. We have not been back since they sold the restaurant about 4-5 years ago, but the menu is pretty much the same. I would give it a try.

We have dined at Le Zinc several times in the last 12 years because it is "around the corner" from where we lived in the Noe Valley in the late 70s-early 80s. We still walk past it quite a bit & we'll often have a glass/carafe of wine before going someplace else for dinner in the Noe Valley. I think the menu has been "simplified" from what it was when they opened. Another husband/wife team - he is French & she is Scottish (I think). It is worth a try. Nice ambiance.
