Our fave in Kihei is Wok Star and our other is already mentioned Paia Fish Market. The Mexican place across the street in Paia Milagros is also very good.
We are going back for our semi-annual trip in August... cant wait! There is also an outdoor skating rink right on the beach in Kihei, really fun.

Cuatro is absolutely fabulous. Small and in a strip mall in Kihei, but delicious, great service and not too expensive. We ate there twice during our trip in January.

We ended up eating at many of the places mentioned here. I will be reviewing them in my trip report sometime over the next few days.

Are you going back to Maui AGAIN?

bettyk Mar 19th, 2011 06:18 PM

The last time we were in Maui was in 2003. Plan to go back next year if the planets line up just right!

Anyway one of favorite restaurants has always been Mama's Fish House. Does anyone have an update on Mama's? Is it still awesome?

beanweb24 Mar 19th, 2011 06:36 PM

IMO, Mama's is still good, but not awesome and not worth the cost at dinner. I do, though, like it at lunch. It's no longer a must do for me. But I think you'll still find people who think it's awesome...I'm just not one of them. ;-)

iamq Mar 20th, 2011 06:50 AM

I agree that Mama's seems better at lunch. It is in a great location for lunch if you are exploring the north shore, however it as been many years since I have eaten there.

I don't know...there are so many places on Maui now that serve spectacular fish in a great, oceanfront setting, it seems like Mama's might not be the big deal it used to be, but I guess everyone should eat there at least once.

bettyk, not sure where you are staying, but if you get a chance you have to try Star Noodle in Lahaina. Fun, lively, great fish presentation and wonderful noodle dishes. And judging from the large group sitting next to us, their selection of saki was good and particularly potent.

iamq, thanks for the info. We normally stay on Kaanapali and definitely will go into Lahaina. We also enjoyed eating at Hula Grill and Leilani's in Whaler's Village.

I know the dining options are many in Maui but my DH really loved Mama's so I was just wondering if it was still good. Agree that I prefer it at lunch also.

After so many years away, will need to brush up on the best places to eat before our trip.

beanweb24 Mar 20th, 2011 04:50 PM

bettyk, Have you eaten at Mala Ocean Tavern in Lahaina yet? If not, give it a shot on your next trip. I had never even heard of it before 2 weeks ago, and ended up going twice. Fabulous! If you like tuna, you cannot skip the ahi bruschetta.

bettyk Mar 20th, 2011 05:57 PM

No, beanweb24, we haven't eaten there before but will check it out. Thanks.

Coconut's Fish Cafe (in the Azeka Mall in Kihei) has the best fishburgers on the island. I highly recommend the Ono or Opakapaga burgers.

sceneisle Mar 26th, 2011 09:47 AM

Correction: make that Opakapaka

iamq Mar 26th, 2011 09:57 AM

sceneisle, I agree! I had the Opakapaka and thought it was delicious! The Mahi fish and chip were really good too. Try the chowder next time also.
