Sue,

First buy an Entertainment Book (Hawaii Edition) - go to Entertainment.com. The book a room at the "Outrigger Reef on the Beach" for 50% off. I ASSUME they will give you their regular discount at Christmas - if not 50%, I think you'd still get at least 25% off. You will not beat that method for getting a decent, oceanfront room. I agree with you - go oceanfront in Hawaii - after all, most people don't go that often! When I haven't spent the money for an oceanfront room there, I've been sorry! Have a great time!

Try The Renaisance Ilika (sp?. I booked it through priceline for about $90 a night. It's at the very end of Waikiki Beach if that matters to you.
Sue, if you just want the balconey/VIEW , and not necessarily be right ON the beach, perhaps the Hyatt would suffice. They, and a few others (down by Kapiolani Park) on the other side of the street don't have high rises across the street from them that would block the view.
And we've used the Entertainment Book too to get 50% off at the Outrigger Reef. We use our Seattle Entertainment Book to make the reservations, then when in Waikiki, purchase the Hawaii book to use the discounts in there for local restaurants etc. Well worth the price.
Have a great trip.

Next to the Hyatt, and also across the street from the beach, is the Sheraton Princess Kaiulani. Their ocean view rooms might be less than Hyatt, yet still in a great location.

Try looking into the Aston Waikiki Beach located directly across the street from Waikiki Beach and a short block from the Hyatt Regency.

If you try the Aston Waikiki Beach, you might as well look into the Waikiki Marriott (former Hawaiian Regent). Or the Waikiki Park Shore, which is on the corner of Kalakaua and Kapahulu, on the edge of Waikiki.
