Any reasonable hotels in NYC?

My daughter and I would like to make a trip to New York City in October or November. I've been checking hotels, and the rates are sky high! I was there in both January (Novotel)and July (Milford Plaza) and paid only $169 per night. I can't find anything under $300 a night for this fall. Can anyone help?

I always use Priceline if booking hotels in NYC. Although I understand their deals aren't as good as a few years ago, I think you can probably get something quite good for 169.

Look here for advice on dates and some hotel options (but not at $169.

Rates Oct through New Year are much higher than January (the lowest rates of the year) or even July.

I would be happy with anything under $300 per night for a decent place.

Suggest you look at places either downtown or the upper west side and reserve something you can cancel - then double check Priceline when you get closer (this time of year they won;t release rooms - if any - untl the last minute).

Have you seen my current thread about "Any more budget Times Square Hotels"?
It is amazing right now, isn't it?

You might look at nyhabitat.com for apartments.

Here's a full one bedroom apartment we rented last May and you can do it for less than a week, unlike many others. It runs $176 a day for 5 day minimums, or $203 if for less than that. It's no five star hotel, but if you stayed at the Milford Plaza, you'll love this place!

Thanks Patrick, and yes, I just read your post. Sorry I had missed it earlier. I had no idea autumn was high season in New York. My daughter and I are thinking of rescheduling our trip to Manhattan. Instead, we are considering London, Tokyo, Hong Kong or Krakow -- all of which we can do for less than New York!

Incidentally, we stayed at the Milford Plaza in July. The floor had been entirely renovated, and the room was perfectly fine! I was a bit surprised because I was warned to expect the Mildew Plaza and that wasn't the case! I would stay there again if I could get the same rate ($169)!

You are rigth. Pretty expensive this year. But try Hotwire if you don't have luck with Priceline. On weekends, you can get 4*s for <$300. Prices higher on weekdays.

Try looking for the same hotels for the 4 nights after Christmas. You'll find the kind of rates you remember. NYC is great that week. Everything is still decorated for the holidays - but the rates are great. I checked Dec. 26 through 30.

rkkwan, let me know what 4 star you can get for under $300 on a weekend in December, please.

Patrick Sep 27th, 2005 05:24 AM

And what I meant to say was that as we approach Christmas, nearly all hotels charge MORE for weekends than weekdays, not LESS.

Patrick - I just punched in some weekend dates in October into Hotwire, and there are 4*s for $298 or something like that. I reported what I found, as a suggestion for the OP.

She's going on Oct or Nov, not Dec. Please read the original post.

My apologies. I've been switching back and forth between the post about NYC hotels in December and this one about hotels in October. I got confused, paraticularly by the last post at the time I posted which was talking about December. It IS nice to know that there are 4 stars (Hotwire's rating system) for $2 less than $300 in October!!!
