I'm holding a reservation for early September at the Alladin. What's the scoop on their bankruptcy and/or changeover to Planet Hollywood? Got an odd rate direct from them -- $79 for Wed., $109 for Thurs, and $229 for Friday. Will keep my eyes open as I can cancel up to two days. But this was much better than any of my other choices this far out. Just wondered if I may get caught in the changeover?

I don't think the changeover will take place for at least a year or two. I called on rates before our trip and that's what the reservation agent said. They did have pretty good rates for my dates as well but we needed something really close to the Venetian. Your reservation should be fine.

According to what I've read recently, final completion on all documents is expected no later than this summer. It's hard to say when real changes will start taking place, though, because Robert Earl (PH CEO) originally stated changes would take a year and be very gradual. However, more recent speculation around LV has renovations beginning as soon as the paperwork goes through, with an eye on a winter re-opening. But since plans always seem to get delayed, a lot of the people I know seem to seriously question that target date. You'll probably be fine, but I'd just keep an eye on things for the next few months. I'll be seeing a reporter friend of mine in Vegas this weekend, so if I hear anything new, I'll post an update.

I wouldn't let the "odd rate" bother you Patrick. I've almost always had to pay various prices per night when booking Vegas hotel rooms.

I guess the only thing odd about the rate was the difference in Wed. and Thurs. Most of the other hotels were pretty much the same for those two nights, but of course I knew Friday would be more.

Interestingly, originally we were going to go to Las Vegas (at the end of a long California stay) on Tuesday and fly home to Florida on Friday, but when I did the air tickets, we could save $75 each by flying home on Saturday (maybe because it's Sept. 11?) So we booked that way, but of course it looks like the Friday night in the hotel will eat up the bulk of that $150 savings, so we'll come out about even.

Hotel rates in Vegas double or more
for Friday and Saturday nights. Better to book for a Sunday or Monday check-in
and check out on a Friday. Just a FYI...

As of the end of February, they were still in the construction planning and cost allocation stage. Since the original deal was announced, the PH/Starwood entity that purchased the hotel, has also been focusing on developing timeshares on the site. That part of the project may be taking priority which could be delaying the hotel re-fit.

Not sure if this would affect anyone's plan to stay at Aladdin, but we had booked our stay there and then heard that Aladdin employees are currently in a labor dispute with management to unionize. We cancelled our reservations in support of the employees. More information can be found here: http://www.lvaladdinalert.info/

This also may explain some of the negative posts I've read on the internet about poor customer service at the Aladdin. If the employees aren't happy . . .
