Any Massetuckians out there?

We are in the eye of the storm!

The sky is crying

The thunder is booming

And the house is shaking.

I keep doing that countdown thing with thunder and lightning. I got to 2. Just waiting for another giant tree to come crashing down on us with each hit.

gyppielou Jul 2nd, 2008 11:30 AM

There was just an earsplitting clap of thunder....I thought the house would crack in two.
Torrential rain,
fireworks in the sky.
Remind me that i should be enjoying this! Oh how I love the weather, but this is on the edge of unsettling.

vjpblovesitaly Jul 2nd, 2008 11:33 AM

where are you talking about?

gyppielou Jul 2nd, 2008 11:36 AM

Sorry

Massachusetts

Anonymous Jul 2nd, 2008 11:37 AM

I think gyppie is in Massachusetts. I am in Quincy, just south of Boston, and it's coming down in buckets sideways where I am right now.

Anonymous Jul 2nd, 2008 11:38 AM

For a graphic image of our current adventure, go to www.wunderground.com and put in a ZIP Code for Massachusetts (02114 will do) then click on the little radar image, and then on "animate map" (on the left).

gyppielou Jul 2nd, 2008 11:40 AM

Stay safe anonymous. Hope the storm is weakening and doesn't hit you as severely.

A mighty good storm - but sccary.

Anonymous Jul 2nd, 2008 11:41 AM

You, too, gyppie. Our lights just blinked off and on, and I hear sirens. The cats don't know whether to be excited or terrified.

yk Jul 2nd, 2008 11:42 AM

I'm out in the western burbs. We had a severe one passed through earlier, about 2 hours ago. The wind was really severe, and it hailed for at least 10 minutes (~corn kernel size).

We seem to miss the current one, though I kept hearing thunder nonstop for the last 15 minutes.

gyppielou Jul 2nd, 2008 11:56 AM

yk, I think you got the brunt of the hail and wind. We got the electric light orchestra

I lost a MAJOR tree this past winter onto my roof while home. When the house shakes, gyppie quakes~!

the waters are receding and the sun is starting to peak back out.

here comes the sun anonymous!

rkkwan Jul 2nd, 2008 01:56 PM

yk - Does that remind you of Dallas, TX? ;)

yk Jul 2nd, 2008 02:39 PM

<i>yk - Does that remind you of Dallas, TX?</i>

It sure does! And I'm surprised to see so many T-storms here in the NorthEast!

In fact, the storms are worse here as it hails here (almost once a week recently). At least there's no hail in Dallas.

Anonymous Jul 2nd, 2008 02:58 PM

Actually, hail is very unusual around here; I've lived in the Boston area for over 50 years and only seen it 4 or 5 times. The recent repeated cycle of patchy extreme thunderstorms is a new one.

yk Jul 3rd, 2008 04:04 AM

Interesting. I used to live here but I didn't recall ever seeing hail. So I hope the recent storms are an anomaly. Yesterday's hail storm was definitely the worst &amp; longest duration I've seen here. The other storms earlier this month usually just hailed for a minute or so.

gail Jul 3rd, 2008 04:46 AM

I was driving yesterday to see patient in Ipswich, MA and drove thru about 30 seconds of small hail.

bennnie Jul 3rd, 2008 07:05 AM

It has been a very strange 2 weeks of thunderstorms. Yesterdays wasn't that bad where I was thankfully - just two claps of extremely loud thunder and lots of rain. Lots worse elsewhere. I remember summers like this when I was a kid - 40 years ago!

We did get a bonus on the North Shore - after a gentle rain shower during my daughter's softball game, we got a beautiful double rainbow.

gyppielou Jul 3rd, 2008 03:11 PM

Here we go again!

Pinkhat Jul 3rd, 2008 09:35 PM

Please, please someone make these thunderstorms go away!!! (I keep doing the countdown thing too, gyppielou.)

bennnie Jul 7th, 2008 06:53 AM

Pinkhat - just have to post to say that I love your name!

gyppielou Aug 7th, 2008 12:35 PM

Here we go again. What strange weather we continue to have.

I love stormy weather, but never remember a summer quite this stormy!!!

Stay safe

OO Aug 7th, 2008 01:14 PM

Just looked at my old zip code, 01201 and they are getting it too. But then I looked at forcasted temps...only 68 tomorrow? I don't know when it was last 68 here. Maybe March. I wanna go home!!

Sara Aug 7th, 2008 04:02 PM

LOL - when I saw the title of this thread, I thought maybe it was about Kentuckians who have moved to Massachusetts (I am one) - or folks from Massachusetts who have moved to Kentucky. :-) Is there a word for residents of Massachusetts? I know people who live in Cambridge are Cantabridgians (not sure if the spelling is correct) -now, that's weird!

Yes, the weather has definitely been unusual this summer - I enjoy thunderstorms, but this is getting ridiculous!

gyppielou Aug 7th, 2008 08:29 PM

Holy crap!

The sky is really tairing it up tonight~

shaz60 Aug 8th, 2008 06:32 AM

There is a name for residents of MA (I am one), but it can't be repeated in polite company.

MareW Aug 8th, 2008 08:02 AM

I'm from MA as well, and know the name of which you speak. LOL.

With all the threats of pop-up thunderstorms, I'm leery of walking a few miles every evening like I normally would. There isn't any shelter along the route.

I've noticed that most of the people hanging out at the waterfront in my area have started to ignore the thunder and lightning until we get an actual downpour. They make me so nervous, especially those with kids!

Anonymous Aug 8th, 2008 08:35 AM

mare, find them a link to the story in the Globe about 2 weeks ago about the group of 10 people who got by lightning before it even started to rain!

gyppielou Aug 8th, 2008 11:46 AM

I don't know the unprintable name!

Here we go again. 3 big in less than 24 hours! The summer of 08 will be recorded as the summer of violent storm alerts.

Last night the hound jumped on my sleeping body licking my face till I woke up to demand attention as the house shook!

shaz60 Aug 8th, 2008 11:58 AM

gyppie -

It starts with the word mass and ends with the word hole. It is usually yelled out a car window and accompanied by a raised digit.

And I agree that the weather this summer is unlike any I have experienced in my life.

Sharon

gyppielou Aug 8th, 2008 12:06 PM

very funny

I guess I'm a pretty good driver! Never heard that, or maybe I'm won of those aggressive drivers that doesn't pay attention to them?

suze Aug 9th, 2008 09:32 PM

Like Sara, I thought you were talking about a mixed marriage between someone from Massachusetts and someone from Kentucky!

petercand Aug 11th, 2008 12:59 AM

same in uk storms last night the earth moved for me( at 66 i mean the thunder) real bad summer peter

irishface Aug 11th, 2008 07:18 AM

OO, I recognized your old zip code! I live in the same county and the weather has certainly been strange here. The thunderstorms have been spotty--just a few miles make a big difference. Just the other evening I came out of the grocery store and it was pouring to beat the band. I decided to wait it out. As it passed there was a wonderful rainbow and as I rode back home, 200 yards from the store, the road was bone dry and like that all the way home (about a mile).

We have been hammered with rain, large hail, thunder/lightning, trees, down, etc. while your old 01201 was spared. It has also happened the other way around.

But in spite of it all, I love it here.

Anonymous Aug 11th, 2008 07:37 AM

My sister and I live 4 miles apart in suburbs just south of Boston, and are often amused by the differences in our &quot;local climates.&quot; She's had hail a couple of times this summer, but I've had none. Or she invites me over to help in the garden, and I say, &quot;But it's pouring out!&quot;

This variation of experiences makes me wonder about the accuracy of the reported rain totals for the region. Do they take measures in several locations and average them out?

irishface Aug 12th, 2008 03:23 PM

Gyppie, just curious: where did you come up with the term massetuckian?
When I googled the word, it led me back to this site. I looked under demonyms (place names for people, but of course everyone knows that) and the names given for people from Massachusetts were either Massachusites or Bay Staters, with Bay Staters given preference.

Words fascinate me and every time I come across a new one, I have this need to know about its origin, etc. Thanks for filling me in!

gyppielou Aug 12th, 2008 09:09 PM

The weather continues to roll in and roll out daily.

Tre Bizzarre!

Irish, a friend said the word in my childhood. I have known and used it since. Perhaps he coined the word after all?!?!
