ANY information on DRY TORTUGAS would be very helpful.......
 

I'll be taking a trip to the Dry Tortuga Island(70miles west of Key West, FL) and would like to know of any Cheap ways to get out there(such as ferries etc.), and if it is really worth it. I'm interested in snorkeling in the reefs, and seeing the fort located on the Island. ALSO..does anyone know of any camp sites that are pleasent either on the island or close to it? -Thanks!

Went to Dry Tortugas 2 years ago in May via the FastCat ferry. It was worthwhile, but only once. The snorkeling around the fort was fair, but we did see our first shark on that trip. It was hotter than Hades, though, and not much shade to be had. The fort is interesting, but I can truly see why it was used as a prison. There were people camping there, so obviously it's allowed, but I'm not a camping person, so it doesn't appeal. It's primitive camping, though, so you would have to take everything there and back.

"any camp sites that are pleasant either on the island..." <BR><BR>All the Dry Tortugas is a small island with a REALLY big fort atop it. There is scarcely room to walk around it, maybe a few trees. The camping is basically a large yard with a little bit of grass. Those who are camping are not doing for the joy of camping but because there is no where else to stay there. Most campers are dedicated bird watchers who come to see the birds, and want more time than a day trip.
