Is he staying downtown or in the one of the suburbs? There are shopping malls in NOrth Hills, Monroeville, South Hills. There is a shopping area in Station Square, across the river from downtown, a short walk across the bridge. I'm no longer familiar with downtown proper. Sorry.

There is a mall at the airport, I am sure he will be happy to know.

I'm not too familiar with Pittsburgh, but I do know there are two or three downtown department stores - Kaufmann's, Lord & Taylor, possible a Lazarus. There's an Ikea on the west side. And in the beautiful neighborhood of Shadyside near Carnegie Mellon and Pitt, you'll find a district of chains and local retailers that should be nice to sweep through.

I would head downtown for shopping -- there are great department stores, Lord & Taylor, Saks etc. Stay away from Station Square -- the stores there consist of Limited and a whole bunch of hokey tourist stores.

Sunny:

I live 16 miles west of Pittsburgh and 4 miles from the Airport. Shopping in the Airport is excellent; unfortunately the locals can't use the facility like they use to since 9/11 if you don't have an airline ticket; so the thing to do is if you are using the airport to get to Pittsburgh stay there and linger at the shops. After spending some time at the Airport, you can catch a 28X Airport Flyer ($2.25 fare) that will stop right in front of an huge IKEA (then proceeds right to downtown Pittsburgh on the Parkway West - no other stops), Toys R' Us, DSL Shoe Warehouse, Office Depot stores and then across two roads (close by) is an outside mall with Bath and Bodyworks, T.J. Maxx and a few other specialty stores. You could get off here for a while to look around and then catch the 28X back to downtown Pittsburgh (the 28X runs every 20 minutes). If you have the convenience of a car you could shop at the mega shopping mall that spreads all over the place around the same IKEA area with Bed, Bath, Beyond, Walmart, Sams Club, Costcos, Ulta (huge makeup shop), $1 store (huge new store), Roomful Express, Barnes and Noble (with Michael's Craft Shop right next to it), then there is a whole indoor mall near all these places which has a Sears, JcPenneys, Lazarus, Kaufmann's, Yankee Candle store, 2 Christmas shops, record store, the list goes on. You will not believe the shopping and huge selections of restaurants and its only about 4 miles from the Airport! If your hubby hasn't picked out a hotel yet there is a one of those Budget Marriotts right next to Walmart and many, many shops if you need the number or address I'll give it to you or if you have questions about it.

Squirell Hill has some great shopping opportunities as well. It is right outside of the city and is a street with many shops. They have a Pottery Barn, Williams and Sonoma, Sephora, Gap, Banana Republic, Ann Taylor and many others. My husbands family lives in Pittsburgh and every time we visit, I like to make a trip to Squirell Hill.

I was in PIT last weekend, and I agree that Station Square is mostly a joke unless you are looking for Steelers stuff. The airport had GREAT shopping, and we almost wished that we had gotten there earlier instead of going to Station Square! DO ride the incline up if you get a chance. At the top of the Monongahela one, the Grandview Saloon had some very good food and a spectacular view of downtown and the stadiums.

Oops, I need to correct myself! The Grandview Saloon was at the top of the Duquesne Incline!

Jodi:

Just a correction, that is Shadyside not Squirrel Hill. I use to live in Sq. Hill (1996-2001)and walk to Shadyside to shop in that area.

Thanks for the correction Stephanie. You are right it is Shadyside. I always tend to confuse it with Squirell Hill since we have to drive through there to get there.
