Anti social behavior
If you are like me and are disappointed and disgusted by the many posts by a small band of anti-social individuals who do nothing except lower the level of interaction on these boards to the level of insults AND are disgusted by the lack of monitoring and or correction by individuals at Fodor's, please e-mail me your comments and I will collect them and take them to the offices of Fodors on an upcoming visit to NYC and demand that they do something to improve our overall experience at this site. Please help make this community a enjoyable one for everyone. My e-mail address for this purpose is: [email protected]. thank you.

To Fodors Poster:

I think you are expecting Fodor's to exercise too much control over this site. Sure, it would be better if we had no advertising, no sniping, no sickos - BUT this is a wonderful service that Fodor's provides, and I appreciate the majority of people on it, who are great! Nothing is ever perfect in this life, and I think Fodor's does very well. There will be arguments as long as there are posters, and different behavior annoys different people. I think you're beating a dead horse! But good luck!

Message: Sorry, but I don't think that's a good approach. Believe it or not, the percentage of unpleasant and/or irrelevant posts on this forum is low by comparison. "Monitoring" and "enforcing posting guidelines" has all but elimated participation on what used to be lively and informative boards on AOL. There is so much valuable information to be acquired on these forums from serious and knowledgeable participants. It's not worth one's time and effort to obsess over a few posts - better to just ignore them and read on... And, each and every time I've brought a truly offensive post to the attention of Fodor's, it's been promptly removed. In that this website is loaded with useful and free information, I would hesitate to make "demands". Fodor's has done more than enough to make this an enjoyable experience. They may decide to discontinue the forums and/or the website altogether...

Special Message to "fodors poster:"

D R O P D E A D ! ! !
|
<sniff sniff> I smell an IMPOSTER

Come on now! Why wouldn't Fodor's use their normal "Customer Service" email address: [email protected] instead of the above "generic looking" address that could belong to a PYSCHO <ahem... Gloria>??

Good Try... but you're SOL!!
|
I agree with all the above posters. I'm new to this site and I've quickly found that 99% of the contributors are friendly and mature people who want to be of service in helping others who have legitmate questions regarding travel. Donna is right - just ignore the lame and rude questions/responses. There are always going to be those few who try to bait us into argument, etc.
The best way to get the point across to those people is to just ignore them. When someone doesn't get the "rise" they're looking for, they'll hopefully stop their behavior.
|
Samantha is right. If we don't respond to the weird webbies, they'll fade into the internet.
|
Dear "Complainer": Surely your mother told you over and over again, "Just ignore them, Dear, and they'll find someone else to bother..."
|
I am afraid that the cure is worse than the illness. I used to participate on a site that became infected with junk rude and obscene postings. The webmaster overreacted and put severe restrictions and censors every posting. The result is no more garbage. However many of the regulars dopped out because of the restrictions and length of time for postings to appear.

Many people want to censor the Internet but that would be a terrible thing. There should neve be any obstacles to the free exchange of information, opinions, etc. If something offends you then do NOT read it or respond. Just ignore it.
|
Ditto to all the above. My experiences on this site have all been positive. Ignore any weirdos you encounter, and be greatful that Fodors provides such a great forum for the positive exchange of ideas and experiences.
|
Sure, I'm "disapponted" and once in a while "disgusted" with a few responses here. But, in the overall, this is just not the case. I completely agree with the advice to simply IGNORE anything you find objectionable. There's just no way you'll ever eliminate all the unpleasant folks from the planet, and why even try to bother? Some would find you "unpleasant". Considering the amazing wealth of information within this website and, particularly, on these Forums, why complain? Surely you realize that many would like very much to rid the planet of "COMPLAINTS". So, it would be better if you would just go away.
|
Please, OH PLEASE, do not march into Fodors and make demands. We LOVE this website and these Forums. I would implore that you not do anything whatsoever to encourage the foks at Fodor's to do anything whatsoever. Dealing with "lower level" people is nothing more than a part of one's maturation process. Better you concentrate on making yourself a better person than attempting to change everyone else.
|
Nope, I'm not like you, and I doubt anyone is... Your best bet is to simply ignore any nonsense you encounter and go forward with whatever you may have to contribute. Overcoming "disappointments" in intregral in anyone's life. Get on with it!
|
I just have one comment: you call for action against insults, but offer one of your own: "anti-social individuals."

If thats not an insult, I am not sure what really is.

Before you start ripping on others, please make sure your own house is in order.

JR
|
I keep hoping that everyone will ignore this "subject" so that it will fall to the bottom, where it belongs...
|
When the author of this post has nothing else better to do than create an email address just to collect complaints, and then while on a trip to NYC - plans to march right in Fodor's offices and demand that they monitor their forums better...then the author will present him/herself as a LOSER! Fodors has bigger and better things to worry about! Are you THAT wrapped up in this Forum?? Does your life evolve so intensly around this Forum that you MUST take this to the extreme that you are?... this Forum is that much a part of your life?

If you answered yes to any of the above, them you have my utmost sympathies.

dmd

Anti social behavior is actually a medical diagnosis. Fodors Forums are very helpful and sometimes amusing. "Fodors poster" may be suffering from anti social personality disorder. Although highly doubtful as he/she seems to enjoy the limelight.
Tara, how very hypocritical of you to respond this way given that, without provocation and for no reason, you've taken to attacking people on this forum that you don't even know. Your patronizing attitude towards fellow Fodor's members is despicable and is you are one of the "disgusting" people you refer to.

[email protected] writes:
Author: Tara ([email protected])
Date: 3/13/2000, 1:56 am ET

Message: Sure, I'm "disapponted" and once in a while "disgusted" with a few responses here. There's always the obligatory phrase "get a life" for you to fall back on. Perhaps conditions are now right for "fodors poster" to move to Austria.
Hello,
I am a teenager and I come to Fodors a lot, because I travel with my grandmother and like to find out info about the places i am traveling to. I like reading peoples messages about the places,it kinda gives me an idea about the place. I agree with the people before, that they shouldnt make any changes. But in a way i feel sorry for the guy who wrote the message, because everyone is kinda ragging on him. Anyways my point is,is that everyone has been giving a lot of "crap" I guess you could say and he hasnt gotten angry and written back to everyone. So yes,it's not that great of an idea, and we like it how it is,thats all you gotta tell him.ok.Thanks.

Mya
|
Yawn!
|
Mya:

I applaud your maturity and intelligence. Your advice is 100% correct. The first rule of debating is attack the message but NOT the person.
|
Mya-you're absolutely correct!

I haven't been using this site for long, but I find it an excellent service. I haven't seen any "anti-social" postings (yet). But anti-social behavior is a way of life. Everyone's entitled to their opinions, and they should be able to express them as they see fit. The rest of us should just take the negative comments with a grain of salt.
|
I find it amusing that some of Fodors most "progressive" posters deem posters they don't agree with as being "anti-social." In George Orwell's 1984, Big Brother declared non-conformists as being "anti-social." A fellow named Joe Stalin enjoyed using the same term some years ago. So did, I believe, a fellow named Adolf Hitler. Memory tells me that Mao Tse-Dung used similar language.

this area is suppose to be on arkansas & I didn't see much to do with it,maybe someone just doesn't get it.

I always wondered how these old posts resurrected themselves. If I interpret the previous post correctly, posts do not just disappear. After posting on the general interest board, the thread is then placed on one or more of the other areas of interest? Thus, this thread was high on the list on the Arkansas board because it hadn't been visited as frequently. A person visits the Arkansas board, sees the thread, and thinks it was intended for that site, responds, and then the message is brought to the top of the general interest board again? Is this how the posts and threads work?
|
People like you keep resurrecting them, dear. When you click on it, it goes back to the top and unless you click a particular state, and post something elsewhere, it will stay at the top.

Author: Just curious ([email protected])
Date: 8/12/2000, 9:43 am ET

Message: I always wondered how these old posts resurrected themselves.
