another Savannah dining question
 

Arriving friday afternoon at 4pm to Hampton Inn on Bay street and need suggestions for casual dinner that we can walk to but not too far (my mom has knee problems)?? Other plans for eating include Uncle Bubba's(Paula Deen tour), Olde Pink House (have reservations), Lady and Sons(have reservations for Mother's Day), and Mrs. Wilks(for lunch on monday). Also interested in good bakery for breakfast, afternoon pie, etc. We will have a car but prefer not drive anyplace on Friday. Appreciate any suggestions.

I don't have suggestions for you, but I wanted to say how jealous I am. I ate at Olde Pink House when I visited Savannah and had to control myself from licking my plate, it was very good. And just the other day I was thinking of Mrs Wilkes, that was just now "home" food. Enjoy, and have a bit for us Fodorites who can't be there. :)

We had great shrimps at One eyed Lizzie's on river street.PAul

There are quite a few restaurants on River Street, a short distance but brutal walk away - and these are really the closest places. Brutal because from the Hampton Inn one must walk down/up nasty metal stairways to get to River level, the equivalent of one building story, and then walk on the most uneven cobblestones I have met up with anywhere (and I am from Boston which has some authentic and uneven walking surfaces).

If you turn left or right on Bay Street you can walk further but it will be less dangerous for a bad knee. Turn right and walk a couple of blocks to where Bay Street and River Street slope up/down to almost meet on a more level plane - but then you need to walk on an uphill/downhill slope. There is a restaurant with a river deck at that end, about a third of a mile from hotl, sorry do not remember name and have never eaten there.

Or turn left and walk about the same distance and go into entrance of the hotel there (sorry, brain freeze - it is either a Hyatt or Hilton) on other side of Bay Street and take elevator to River Street level.

There is an Outback Steakhouse and some chain rib place less than a block from Hampton Inn (turn left - same side of street)

Breakfast - Hampton Inn has a slightly above average buffet breakfast included - nice breakfast room plus tables in lobby alcove.

Just wanted to say I had the best seafood gumbo ever at Uncle Bubba's! Plus, if the weather is nice, eating on the patio is very pleasant.

Maybe we will just take a taxi someplace....casual dining and not too expensive..20 per person or less. Sandwiches, etc OK

Gryphon Tea Room on Bull Street. Historic building, antique furnishings, authentic stained glass windows. Might be better choice for a lunch/brunch as I am not sure of hours - but I am guessing your mother would like it sometime during your trip. Info can be accessed from SCAD.edu website as it is actually operated by Savannah College of Art and Design.

FYI - quite a few buildings and galleries in Savannah have been projects of SCAD - this started as an unhappy relationship between school and Savannah, but has grown into a historic preservation partnership to the benefit of both (disclaimer - I am biased, son is student at SCAD)

I did a little research about Gryphon tea room...sounds like the perfect place for a lunch before our flights home. Thanks

I liked Gryphon Tea Room so much that I'm detouring there on a trip to Virginia next month. Unfortunately I don't think it's open past 4 PM, and is definitely closed on Sundays.

Don't leave out Elizabeth's on 37th. Absolutely my favorite place! Ask for either Gary or Greg.

You won't need to drive anywhere. We stayed 3 nites in Oct. 07. Parked when we arrived and didn't use the car again until we left. Very pedestrian friendly place. Old Pink House was a wonderful experience not to be missed. Prepare to wait even with reservations at the lady and sons. You have to line up just to get a reservation and boy they do. We opted not to. We also ate at Vics on the River. Beautiful view and food was great. If you like gelato, there is a place on the riverfront that is a combination candy store and ice cream shop. The gelato was supreme and I'm hooked on it now. We also had lunch at a Briish Pub one day. They had scotch eggs (a favorite of my husbands) and their shrimp salad was really wonderful. Can't remember the name but it was close to the Foley House where we stayed. Hope this helps
