Another Pet goes missing at an airport
 

JFK Airport has lost a Champion Whippet that was flying home after the Westminster Dog Show in NYC.
Whippets run like the wind, I really worry that this dog will not be found :(
Pup will ride in the car or take a boat if we have too! ((&))

How do you lose a dog?

Luggage maybe but a live animal?

The pup got out of the cage all by her self.The helo spotted her, but couldnt descend to retrieve her.She is worth $150K...

I'm sure she is scared but I'm also sure they'll find her.

I'm sure the reward is several thousand dollars.

That is some smart dog to be able to open a cage all by herself.
When we were living in NY, a couple had a beautiful dog, I don't remember what kind, maybe an Akita..it got loose in the cargo area, ran away..got hit by a car.
I have seen those crates, if they are locked up, the dog should not be able to open them.
Pup would just walk up to the nearest person and give them his paw ((L))

A dog that is desperate enough (and smart enough) can get out of almost anything, including a travel crate.

Unfortunately, she was lost last night and while it's been fairly warm in NYC this week, it's still February and has been getting cool at night. JFK is on/next to almost 5000 acres of wetlands and we are supposed to get another cold snap (but no more snow) this weekend.

Whippets have little natural protection from the cold (thin coats and little body fat). If she is not found within the next 24 hours or so, she may not make it. Supposedly, she is friendly and will likely just walk up to the next human she sees, but because she was crated, she may not have ID tags on her, and they may not realize what dog is (you never leave a collar on a crated dog).

I feel so badly for her owners - yet one more reason our big dog will never fly.

Maybe it ran away to avoid having to compete in more dog shows. That would make sense.

Apparently they've called off the search, but will continue to "keep their eyes open." So very sad. I hope someone finds this dog. :(

I would be out there walking the neighborhoods, going door to door. Jeez..that poor pup. But most likely, it won't freeze to death, a dog that pretty will be warm and snug in someones home. (Fingers Crossed)

I was thinking that this dog is certainly microchipped - so even without a collar can be tracked to owner. What's odd is that when breeders ship dogs in crates they usually use a cable tie to make sure the dogs can't get out.

And really, should extra resources be used to find this dog just because it's a show dog? If your dog was lost the only one looking for it would be you!

Anything worth $150K is probably insured. If so, there will have be a smart insurance-funded loss prevention specialist looking for it (so to not pay up) I've read enough Dick Francis mysteries to know that.

wliwl..that was what I said..I would be out there looking, door to door. I would not call off any search.
A GPS chip would be smart, if you have a dog that valuable, forget about loving it, you would think they would protect it as much as possible.

I think the GPS thing is a great idea for dogs -- but apparently, no one has been too anxious to develop that because of privacy issues. (Probably worried someone would be tracking cheating husbands etc.) On the other hand, no one seems too concerned about privacy these days so maybe it's time to get going on that...

First I've heard/seen of this sad story. Holding the good thought here for a good outcome. Poor scared puppy.........
