My husband and I will be attending a convention at the Hilton Hawaiina Village in a few months. We would prefer to stay at another hotel on the beach. Some place less crowded. Any suggestions?

The only oceanfront hotel near the Hilton is the for-military-only Hale Koa (almost next door).

If you don't mind driving to the Hilton (and paying the daily parking fee), the other oceanfront hotels are Halekulani, Sheraton, Outrigger Reef, Moana Surfrider, Outrigger Waikiki, Royal Hawaiian, Waikiki Shore, or (waaay down from Waikiki) New Otani Kaimana Beach. How long are you staying? Do you want a hotel or an apartment? I was getting frustrated with the hotels promising oceanfront or full view depending upon availability on arrival.
I'm renting a marina front apartment in September and they seem not to have a real minimum. But the week rates are really a steal. It's on the marina just west of the Hawaiian Village and a short walk. It's the Ilikai Marina Condos (not to be confused with the Ilkai Hotel).

I don't know about driving there but maybe taking a Bus or Cab. My Wife & I love the Hyatt Regency that is across the street from the beach but you can get a deluxe ocean front view of the beach from the 26th or 27th floor like we have a couple times when we have stayed there. We stayed in the tower that is towards the north & we could see the surfers out in the ocean & down Waikiki beach all the way down. You can get really good deals there also with breakfast for two & free nights when you stay so many. Like 5th night free. They call it something special which I can not remember like Sunrise or ???.Anyway thought you might like it like we do. We stayed on the 26th one year & the 27th the next, same room just one floor up. Great view, good restaurants, nice atmosphere. Good Travels.

Hilton Hawaiian Village has time share condos right on teh property ocean front. Ck thru VBRO..our friends have one and it is great. HAs it's own Concierge.

Outrigger Reef is reasonably close, just the other side of Fort de Russey park. I don't know it is "less crowded" but it is not as large a resort as HHV.

Thank you everyone. You have been a wonderful help with our decision. My husband and I have rented thru VRBO a couple times before. I will check everyone's suggestions out.

I was very disappointed in the Hyatt Waikiki. Great location, but I thought it was very overpriced. Nice views from the upper floors. The pool was pathetically small. The restaurants very mediocre. I wouldn't stay there next time.

Well Placename, where would you stay & why? I know your opinion of my choice now give me a chance at a go at yours. I might like it. How is the view, is it on the beach, does it have a restaurant. Don't post something to diss someone elses ideas, give your own, then discuss the merrits of the others. I think President Obama liked it just fine when he stayed there when his Grandmother was ill the beginning of November. If you over paid I'm also sorry, I got a good deal & we never over pay. I have over the years cooked in a few very good places(not for some time) & I thought the two restaurants that I ate at in the Hyatt Waikiki was good not just mediocore, but I can't compare them to your choices. Sorry to vent on this posting but I feel that you deserved it, Placename. I think I will stop posting on & reading on this site because of the last two days I have run into two people that have attacked me for my suggestions & gave the impreshion that only they could be right, ME,ME,ME. BYE

We stayed at the Hilton Hawaiian Village and the Outrigger Waikiki. Of the two, The Outrigger Waikiki was much zooier! At the Hilton, we stayed in one of the towers that had its own check in and concierge, and were glad we did. The tower also had its own pool and cocktail hour.

By "less crowded" do you mean the beach or the hotel? If it's beach, judging by what we observed last month, stick with the Hilton. If it's the hotel.... my wife says next time we go, she wants to stay in the old section of the Moana Surfrider.

Great locations but most of these hotels such as H.V. are as bad as Grand Central Station!

A quieter option would be Moana Surfrider. The Royal Hawaiin would be perfect but I think they are still closed for renovations.

The condos near the marina are nice but you are definately getting off the vibe and beat of Waikiki.

If that is not a problem, then you will have access to hundreds upon hundreds of condos and apartments in that part of town if you so choose.

Have you ever stayed in the concierge tower at HHV? Our family spent 4 nights in it and really liked it. We had our own pool and all of the concierge services...which were terrific.

Otherwise, the W Hotel is much quieter.

But the W is NOT a W by stateside comparisons, and at night every local wannabe thug in Waikiki and beyond invade the hotel and line up from the lobby to the parking lot vying to get in to listen to gangster rap.

Not very pleasant for a guest. We switched hotels after 3 nights.

I wasn't aware the Royal was back open.

How does it look? Anyone seen it since the opening?

As of a week or so ago, "W" Diamond Head changed management.

It is now a Castle hotel. The Lotus at Waikiki Diamond Head.

They have some great deals right now through March 31. However, this hotel is about 2 miles or so from HHV.

You can walk to HHV from these hotels. I listed them from closest to farthest.

Waikiki Shore, Outrigger Reef, Halekulani, Sheraton Waikiki, Royal Hawaiian, Outrigger Waikiki & Moana Surfrider.

Outrigger Reef is just about completely refurbished. This would be a good choice as it is near HHV.

Waikiki Shore is the only condo on the beach. No pool. It is co-managed by Castle & Outrigger. Those in Outrigger rooms can use the pool next door at Outrigger Reef.

I don't think HHV will be too crowded April or May. Plus the grounds there are huge compared to any other hotel in Waikiki.

I doubt this is what you're looking for but on my advice a coworker stayed at Queen Kapiolani (he saved $100+/night over HHV prices) while attending a conference at HHV last fall. He loved it.
