Another Death at Queen's Bath

People, please be careful. It's NOT necessary to risk your life in order to see incredible beauty in Kauai.

Someone also drowned at Kipu Falls last week.

What death? A local resident, airlifted, "condition unknown" according to link.

Songdoc Jul 8th, 2011 10:16 AM

oops. I meant to write another "accident." The death was at Kipu Falls. But as far as I'm concerned, being airlifted out to a hospital is pretty serious. It would not be something I'd want on my vacation.

There are risks to lots of places(natural or man-made). I understand your point, but I think most of the time the media plays things up far far more than they should. It is tragic and terrible circumstances for families to deal with. A person takes risks whether they are rafting, hiking, swimming, or even jogging in Central Park. You have to be aware of your surroundings and don't try to do to much if you are inexperienced. Normally, the rewards far outweigh the risks. I should also add that a lot of the time it is alchohol or drug related accidents. This woman lived in Princeville, so she was most likely familiar with the area.

Nominee for the Darwinian award?

Excuse me, this was not a death, she slipped and was injured. A person can slip anywhere. In my opinion, it is not a good example of why the Queen's Bath can be dangerous. I am not saying that at times the Bath isn't super dangerous, but this example does demonstrate that danger.

It's just that the title of this post is so dramatic and then if you actually read the story, it was an injury.

Yes, but it WAS a death at Kipu Falls. Of course there are dangers everywhere. But walking over jagged, uneven lava is begging for trouble.

Maybe I'm extra sensitive because a few years ago I slipped crossing a stream en route to the falls on the Kalalau Trail. My face slammed into a rock.

Songdoc, the death was not at Queen's Bath so the title is very misleading. If you only walk on concrete sidewalks you rarely see anything beautiful. Anytime you go into a wild area there are risks. You have to be aware of those risks and your ability to manage risk. Everybody is different and they should view the risks according to their ability

My wife and I have backpacked throughout the islands and much of the time on uneven lava. We accept the risks and yes I have fallen. Still, I hike because of the incredible beauty that I experience. I have also gone to the queen's bath. The danger for most people is not hiking to the baths, the danger is being at the front lip of the bath when a wave hits.
