anniversary in wine country/lodging

give us your best spots for a romantic getaway weekend plus hotel/dining thoughts.

is this Virginia wine country you are asking about?

the best spot would be right in the middle of the wine country. definitely make reservation for both: lodging and dining.

We don't really know what wine country you are referring to. Could you provide more info and a price range you might be interested in?

If it's the Napa Valley, I'd suggest either Auberge du Soleil or Meadowood.

Both are beautiful properties with excellent restaurants. The Auberge is possibly the most romantic of the two; ask for a table on the balcony unless you're there in July/August.

Sorry to disagree, but think the Auberge is highly overrated and ridiculously overpriced. We spent 100 bucks for lunch on the patio and heard the constant roar and horn honking from the traffic. Paula, look at lovely Healdsburg or Sonoma for a quiet and romantic trip. We loved the B%Bs of Sonoma, but for a honeymoon might suggest the Madrona Manor? The Sonoma Mission Inn also gets lots of great reviews. The new Ledson Hotel in downtown Sonoma looked dreamy- we loved their retaurant and winery. You might want to consider the Mendocino area for a great romantic trip. If you love quiet, nature and fabulous views, people and food this is it. None of the pretentious atmosphere of Napa. Look at Alegria, the Brewery Gulch Inn and Glendeven for starters. Our recent stay at the Brewery Gulch made us book an immediate return trip. Lovely!

We stayed at the Madrona Manor and were very disappointed it in. I wouldn't go back.

The Auberge du Soleil may be overpriced and overrated, but a lot of people find it romantic--and the rooms are lovely.

On the other hand, if southernpaula has time to drive up as far as Mendocino, I would certainly recommend lovely Glendeven with its individually decorated rooms full of personality. We've stayed in three of them, all very nice. The walk across the road through the meadow to the edge of the Pacific Ocean is wonderful.
