Annapolis to D.C.
Hey there. My husband and I, along with another couple, will be staying in Annapolis and plan to head into D.C. on Inauguration Day to observe the festivities.

Our plan was to catch the Metro at New Carrollton and get off at the South Capitol stop, however I'm thinking this station will be closed, based on recent advisories released by the Inauguration Committee.

Does anyone have suggestions for alternate stopping points/routes that would put us within walking distance of the mall?

I don't see any mention from WMATA about a closure of that stop:

"The U.S. Secret Service has deemed the Inauguration as a special national security event and due to security measures, the Archives-Navy Memorial/Penn Quarter Metrorail station on Metro's Green and Yellow Lines and the Smithsonian Metrorail station on the Blue and Orange Lines, will be closed all day on Inauguration Day, Tuesday, January 20."

Keep checking that site. If they close it, your alternate Metro stop depends entirely on what your viewing intention is. If you want to watch at the Capitol (do you have tickets?), that would suggest Eastern Market. If you just want to be on the Pennsylvania Avenue route, head to Federal Triangle.

You will need to be en route HOURS in advance. They're telling people to get to the Capitol by 8:30 a.m. - the crowds of people and security will eat up a lot of travel time.

Again, it all depends on what you have tickets to see.

If you do not have tickets for the enclosed area at the foot of the Capitol, you probably want to be on the Mall with the other million or three spectators. That would mean taking the train an extra stop or two. Federal Triangle is likely closest you can get to the Mall via the Orange Line on Jan 20.

If you have tickets for the Capitol grounds, the tickets will indicate which Metro station you should use.

Thanks kgh8m and kayd! We don't have tickets and plan to be amongst the estimated million or so on the mall. We'll keep checking (up to the minute we head out the door). I'm heading over to the Metro site now to look at the map and familiarize myself with Federal Triangle.

L'Enfant Plaza station would be about as convenient as Fed Triangle. It slipped my mind because I approach the Mall from the Constitution side, but you'll be on the Independence Ave side.
