La Madeleine is the place carolyn is thinking of and it's a fine place for breakfast or for a cup of coffee or tea and pastry in the afternoon. I think it's a chain, or at the very least, there's more than one in the DC area.

Also, there's a great farmer's market in Alexandria in the square across the street from the Holiday Inn on King Street. Great for the early risers!
