The Toronto Globe and Mail printed her obit this morning; I was startled to see it. They included an excerpt from an interview she gave last year in which she said she was suprised people remembered her most for "The Graduate" - she thought her best role was in "Miracle Worker." What a talented lady.

I was shocked to hear the news. She was a wonderful actress and seemed like an interesting person to know.
I was at a benefit last week where Paul Simon sang and included his famous song to Mrs. Robinson. I was reminded of my mother telling me that when she and my father were young newlyweds, they took her parents with them to see "The Graduate" and my grandfather was absolutely horrified! Just goes to show you how our society has changed.

I had the pleasure of meeting her & Mel Brooks a couple of years ago when she was looking for an apartment in NY to use during a play she was scheduled to be in. I never heard anything about it after that, perhaps that's when she got sick.
She was lovely, and will be greatly missed. The lights will go out on Broadway tonight in her honor.

Classy indeed. And funny as well. What was that funny, funny tango number she did and with Mel or someone else? I remember laughing and laughing at it, but can't remember what it was in.

Patrick, I beleive the "tango" scene you are referring to was from Brook's "Silent Movie" -- classic, hillarious and I haven't seen it years (hmmm -- wonder if it's available on DVD?)
What a great, great lady and actress. I was unaware that she was ill. 73 much too young. She was amazing in so many films -- "Turning Point" one of my favs.
She transcended generations too. My 17-y/o daughter loved her in "How to Make an American Quilt" and "Home for the Holidays." She was fabulous in both.
There will never be another like her.

Two great battle scenes in two of her best roles/movies - Turning Point (one of my all-time faves, too) and in Quilt. (And weren't they both with Shirley MacLaine, or am I disremembering the Quilt one?)
I was kind of surprised, too, that the quick Newshour obit I saw didn't mention Miracle Worker - I think her work as Annie Sullivan is what first put her on the map.
Didn't count how many times the word 'class' came up in this thread, but it's the only word needed, isn't it? She just exuded/exemplified it.
Such a shame and a loss.
