Anchorage Hotels
On our upcoming (July 2017) trip to Alaska, we will be spending a couple of days in Anchorage. What hotel(s) would you recommend? We love to be in the center of activity - in Europe we always get hotels at the city centers; walk out and shop, tour, sight-see,... A view is always a nice addition. Luckily we are not on a budget. Whatever insights you can share would be appreciated.

The Embassy Suites have a small kitchen which might make your breakfast a little easier. The Snow City Cafe is also a good breakfast spot. DW and I saw all of downtown that we wanted to see in about 5 hours. We stayed out at Eagle Creek and commuted in. In July it will be daylight until close to midnight. My advice is to use that extra day to go to either Denali or to the Kenai Peninsula. |
We liked the Hilton.

The Captain Cook is the grande dame of downtown, and tower rooms can have terrific views. The Marriott is nearby and also first class, as is the Hilton (which is closer to the "center" of downtown, but that doesn't mean a lot.) I also like the Sheraton, although it's a bit of a walk from things on the east edge of the downtown area.
The midtown hotels like the Embassy Suites really require you to have a car. If you do, and would like something very nice and very "Alaskan," then head to the Alyeska Hotel in Girdwood, around 45 minutes from downtown and/or the airport. |
TripAdvisor ratings prompted us to book at Embassy Suites, and we are glad we did. They offered an excellent evening reception and breakfast, and the suite was spacious. The staff was the best of any we encountered in Alaska. We were totally satisfied.

I should have mentioned that we couldn't find a reason to walk around the center of Anchorage. Alaska is about scenery and outdoor activities.

I stayed at the Anchorage Grand. It's small and nothing fancy but it was quite comfortable. What I liked most was the access to the RR station just below it. Enjoy Alaska!
