Anaheim - no car
 

Will be in Anaheim for 5 days in October. DH attending a conference during the day, so we are staying at the Marriott near the Convention Center (across from Disneyland). I will not have a vehicle to use, but am not afraid to use public transportation if it's available. Suggestions for things that I should do during the day? What about restaurants not-to-miss for the evenings? DH wants to avoid the Disney crowd as much as possible (I'm not as concerned about that - and may even venture there one day).

Amtrak has stations in Anaheim (ANA) and Fullerton (FUL).

You could make a day trip to Santa Barbara.
The things I like in Santa Barbara are the mission and the zoo.

A closer train trip would be down to San Juan Capistrano. Interesting and easily walkable town with one of California's most beautiful missions.

Lots of people visit Disneyland w/o a car and probably because of that there is decent bus service in Anaheim. It us called ART (Anaheim Resort Transport) http://rideart.org

janisj beat me to the link for the ART shuttle service. If you wanted to visit the beach or Universal (an hour away) look into taking a tour with Anaheim Tour Company or anaheim411 if you will not rent a car.

Totally agree with going to San Juan Capistrano by train.

You can also do a day trip into downtown Los Angeles, Metrolink runs to Union Station.

Even if you don't go into Disneyland (I certainly would, over Universal!) Downtown Disney and the adjacent hotel can be entertaining. For an unusual Disney themed activity, you might call the Grand Californian and ask to join their Arts and Crafts architecture tour. It's worth going inside the hotel even if you don't book the tour.

I also enjoy walking through the Disneyland Hotel and looking at the art.

The mission at San Juan Capistrano is worth seeing and as logandog mentions the town is easily walkable. Just over the tracks is the popular Hidden House for coffee and great tacos can be had at El Campeon down the street from the mission.
