Anacortes, WA lodging and dining

We'll be stopping in Anacortes on our way to Orcas in July. Any recommendations for a place to stay and dinner? We stayed at the Fidalgo Country Inn last time but wonder about trying someplace closer to town and the ferry.

Also wondered about the ferry wait on July 1(mid week but the Thursday before the 4th). All of our other visits have been earlier in the summer.

Much thanks

There isn't anyplace special to stay in Anacortes. You might do better in La Conner--a charming little town about 15 miles away. La Conner Channel Lodge and The Wild Iris have good reputations and web sites.

You are right to be concerned about the wait for the ferry. It's likely to be long.

More thoughts. In Anacortes you might check out Channel House and Islands Motel (which serves a good breakfast and has a nice restaurant). The both have web sites. The staff at these places would also be a good source of information about how early to get to the ferry of your choice.

Anaco Bay Inn isn't bad and there's also anaco Inn. Nantucket B and B is very nice place also. Like the previous poster said, there isn't anything special in this area, hotel-wise. As for eating, for breakfast....Calico Cupboard has the best breakfast, Gere-a-deli has the best lunch and Greek Islands and/or Bella Isola would be perfect for dinner. On Friday nights only, Gere-a-deli has a great dinner menu.
Hope this helps.

In regards to the ferries, if your going to drive on, you should be at the dock about 2 hours before the boat you want. Mininum 2 hours. And check out this web page (http://www.wsdot.wa.gov/ferries/)
They have all information listed you would want. One thing I suggest though, if your planning on parking and walking on, I wouldn't park out on Highway 20 near Smilk golf course and use their shuttle. There have been a lot of breakin's out there lately.

We stayed at a great little place called the Ship Harbor Inn. It's right next to the ferry terminal.

Check out this thread:

The ferry terminal is not actually "in town" but a couple miles west.
