Amtrack Fares

I am planning a trip via Amtrack from California to Albuqueque (Santa Fe) in early January. I noticed as did another poster that prices have gone up since mid November and now are not much less than air travel.
Do Amtrack prices continually fluctuate as do air fares?
Any chance that prices could go down again closer to the planned dates?
Other suggestions?

I found fares for Los Angeles to Albuquerque to be $58 one-way for reserved coach seat.

That's pretty good, don't you think? Lowest one-way fare on Southwest is $94+tax.

BTW, no "c".

Yes, Amtrak fares fluctuate, but I don't think they fluctuate as much as airfares. I don't know the formula they use. I do notice that fares tend to go up as you get closer to the departure date. Also, some trains sell out. I don't know if they are likely to get lower closer to the time of departure. I wouldn't bet on it.

There is a AAA discount but has to be booked several days before departure (no last minute purchases)
I recently booked a ticket the same day as departure and it was quite a bit more than if I had purchased in advance.

Amtrak has a cut-off date, don't remember, 7 or 14 days before travel, when prices jump up.

Before that, they may announce specials on their website, so check it regularly.

Early January may be school/college vacation time when the seats go fast.

So, my suggestion would be to check low-cost airlines like JetBlue, Southwest, Alaska, sign up with Travelocity fair watcher.

$58 tonite (12/9) to 12/11, 12/13,
$72 12/12, 12/14,
$90 12/15 - something

But then 12/24 is $58, while 12/25 is $72

1/1 & 1/2 is $113
1/3 is $90
1/4 - 1/7 is $72
1-8 is $58

So, I think the only pattern is demand. It costs more on the days more people are likely to travel, and not based on 7- or 14-day advance.

rkkwan, I have an interesting assignment for you. (Or at least, I think it's interestingl) Check on the fares for the exact trip in a couple of weeks and let's see if they have gone up or down. It would be interesting to know how they do set fares.
I know they announce specials from time to time, and don't know if you change to a lower fare if you've already purchased a ticket.

Amtrak website - hot deals - weekly specials: offer up to 90% discount. Not sure who has the patience to wait several weeks for lower fares.
