Americans visiting Mexico
My husband and I are planning a trip to Cabo San Lucas. Recently, there have been numerous reports about safety in Mexico especially for Americans. Has anyone traveled to this location in the past month or so? Any problems?

P.S. I used to visit this board regularly and ask questions, leave my real name, and get intelligent responses. I apologize for no longer leaving my real name and Email. After reading some of the recent responses to serious questions, I have decided it is best to stay anonymous.

The first thing that I would do is post your question in the Latin America forum.

It is true that crime has reached epidemic levels in some areas of Mexico. However you should be all right in Cabo San Lucas. The main thing is exercize some reasonable caution. Do not wander off the beaten path and watch where you go and what you do at night.

Yes, do post this on the latin American forum, also.

My sister just got back from a "Girls go to Cabo" weekend (last weekend) and had no trouble at all.

My Mexican friends tell MOST of the crime is in Mexico City. Cabo should be fine.

Michele
Hi Pj, we regularly travel in Mexico for the past five years with NO problems. We just returned from Cabo and had a blast! I agree with the previous poster, crime mostly in Mexico City and some in Tijuana, just be careful as you would anywhere else. The mexicans are wonderful friendly people who love to show off their beautiful land! Go and enjoy and make new friends!!

My boyfriend's parents have a timeshare in Cabo and go about twice a year, and they have never encountered any problems.

Cabo is probably the most Americanized part of Mexico. It is much more politically and socially stable than Mexico City, Tijuana, Puerto Vallarta, Nogales, even Cancun. Locals told us this last year when we were there. Locals are happy because Cabo is booming, there's near full employment (so they said) and wages are higher than in most other areas. Where there's less jealousy and poverty there's less crime.
Still, I'd stay in heavily touristed areas at night and always have your wits about you. We felt very safe (except for the frequent verbal assaults from the street guys hawking timeshares in town. Geez are they annoying).

Thanks you all! You've restored my faith in this web site! The trip is booked and we will be on our way!

Oh, yeah. The time share hawkers -- a breed unto themselves. Rank right up there with cockroaches!
