Americans studying in London
Does anyone have feedback on the safety for Americans studying abroad? I have 3 weeks to make a decision for the january term - my son will be in London for his Junior year.

I would think London is just about as safe as anyplace in the western world right now. Certainly, the English will welcome him. It's a wonderful opportunity for him and I think you should go for it. (I wish I could--if I could, I'd jump on it.)

What a golden opportunity! I wouldn't hesitate for a second. Can anyone guess that he will be any safer in the US than in London? Let's be honest. His chances of getting hit by a car and killed at home are probably greater than his risks in London, especially if you are referring to terrorist activity, or contacting mad cow disease, or any other similar possiblility.

Jan,

I used to live in London and found it to be very safe and convenient too with the great public transportation system. I would not hesitate one bit. I'd go back in a second if I could. Hope your son has an excellent time.

Jan,
My husband and I lived in London for a summer 30 years ago while he was taking some classes at the Univ of London. We had a wonderful time. As I write my son, who is 30, is now in London on business. He will be there for another week. My boss just come back and said everything was great.

If I had the opportunity, I would be on the next plane. Instead we will be flying to Calif to see my son for Thanksgiving. Maybe he will take me on his next trip.

I've been to London twice and to be honest, at times I felt safer there than here in the U.S.

I think your son can receive nothing but good from a year in London. My college roommate did a six-month hotel/restaurant management internship there back in '92 and stayed with a local family. She loved it and met some amazing people from all over the world.

Of course, the Tube (subway) doesn't always work smoothly and the pollution can be a jolt at times. But if I could have done it, I'd have done my junior year in London in a hearbeat! Just think of all those weekend jaunts...
