Typically places that have good music don't have great food and vice versa. There are some exceptions. Also, not many places will have live music that's background music. Why bother? For background music recorded will do. I'll post what I know.
Near your hotel, Dizzy's Coca Cola in the Time Warner building is a new jazz venue with some views of Central Park. They serve food and I'm sure have burgers. It can get pricey. On Monday nights they have Juilliard (great music school at Lincoln Center) students perfoming and entry prices are much less.
Also not far from your hotel are Iridium Jazz Club, Birdland Jazz and the already mentioned BB Kings. None of these places is known for food, but rather for music. Food is varying degrees of passable to good.
Blue Smoke already mentioned is a decent bbq/ribs place in the east 20s that has the very good jazz club the Jazz Standard in the basement. You can also eat in the basement so this might be a good food/jazz venue.
In Greenwich Village, the Knickerbocker Bar and Grill has very good jazz but only on Fri. and Sat. nights and pretty good food including burgers and steaks.
Joe's Pub at the Public theater downtown is a cabaret venue with supposedly decent food. I haven't tried it yet.
I think any of these places would allow your son in with you but you should check.
The kid friendly places with music typically have passable to dreadful food. Ellen's Stardust already mentioned is diner type food but overpriced and mostly greasy. The singing wait staff is not background music nor is it jazz.
