Asheville, NC has excellent public transit that will go everywhere a visitor would want to go, including to neighboring towns like Black Mountain and Hendersonville, with their antiques districts. In Asheville itself, if you stay downtown (choices -- Haywood Park Hotel and Renaissance Asheville Hotel, plus beaucoup little inns), you can easily see downtown and Montford, which is where most of the tourist attractions are clustered anyway. For those looking to explore farther afield, the public bus system also can ferry a visitor to the Biltmore Estate and Biltmore Village, shopping districts in West Asheville and on the east side of town, and will also take you to the botanical gardens and the NC Arboretum.

Madison, WI - good bus sytem to get from the town center to the outskirts, but in town center & university area is compact & walkable.
Las Vegas - Strip & downtown area, really no need for a car unless you are going outside the city.
D.C. - excellent public transportation, includes some surrounding areas, like Reagan Airport & Arlington ,VA (Crystal City)

I agree with San Francisco or DC -- the Metro is the best and cleanest.

New Orleans is a very small town and if you want night life it's great, but just one block off Bourbon Street and you can get into some "scary" neighborhoods ... I felt very unsafe there even during the day and we travel a great deal.
