The DOT now requires all domestic airlines to make their on-time records available to the public. Their website is: www.dot.gov/airconsumer.

I flew them once from JFK to Las Vegas and would NEVER fly them again. Along w/ all the normal reasons to complain about an airline (poor service, bad food etc) at no point when I was flying on the airplane did I feel safe.

Thanks for all the responses, since my son would be flying from NYC to Tucson, not for school but the NOLS program, I think I'll use my AA miles or pay the $100 difference rather then send him on AW, too long a flight with too little time for the connection.

Flew America West the beginning of August and had a great experience. The planes were on time both ways and the leg room was sufficient. The food wasn't great but none of the airline food is exceptable. I do not think people are being fair to America West.

Sally, I agree with you.
I've flown AWA a whole lot in the years it's been around and I see no major difference between it and many of the 'second tier' airlines.
It does, however, tend to be last in customer satisfaction on most of the polls I've seen.
BUT: there is not a single major US airline which I think deserves applause for doing a consistently outstanding job of making fliers happy.
Hi all,

I originally posted this question months ago. In the end I did fly with America West and found them to be good. Had no problems except for one delay, but that was due to fog!

Laura

Laura, glad to hear your trip went well! I flew America West from New Orleans to Phoenix a couple of weeks ago and the flights were uneventful. On-time with good service, so I have no complaints.

(The more I fly the more I realize that every airline has its ups and downs and its really a big crapshoot!)
John's last line pretty much summarizes the current status of U.S. airlines (except for the smaller niche lines like Midwest Express and Jet Blue).

It's a crapshoot and you can have a miserable flight at any time, though the odds are against it.
We live in Arizona and fly AWA a lot, both eastbound and westbound. Earlier in 2001, AWA garnered a lot of bad publicity because of cancelled flights. But so did a lot of other airlines. Since then, AWA has been busting their buttons to deliver good, on-time service. Based on our most recent experiences, they have succeeded in achieving a remarkable improvement in customer service and satisfaction.

The same airline can vary greatly from one flight to another... We flew back from Japan via a stopover in Istanbul with Turkish Airlines. Flight from Tokyo to Istanbul was excellent - bulkhead seats, great service & best, most plentiful food ever. Flight from Istanbul to Manchester UK was awful ! ( also Turkish Airlines ).
Can only assume flight from Tokyo was better because the airline assumed it would be full of Japanese businessmen & flight from Istanbul would be full of ( not rich ) British tourists.

BWI to Tucson, via Phoenix, on America West at this time last year. No problems at all, and a very nice price.
