Amazing Race - Sep 24 Episode
I love the locales that they went to for this episode, and I thought the challenges were excellent as well.
The lady with the prosthetic is getting on my nerves. It's like she uses her prosthetic for shock vaule. I feel her stmt is 'don't discriminate against those with disabilities', but then she's always bringing it up.
She had pants on and a running shoe before she got on the horse so unless she said something, no one would know she had a fake leg. She lifts up her pantleg to the person loading them onto the horses and says, "will this make a difference?" What's THAT about?!
I like the father and daughter team and think they are working well together.
Initially I wasn't so fond of the beauty queens cuz it seemed it was all they talked about. However, after this episode they're part of my "cheering for" group. After falling off the horse and getting dragged, they got back up and did a tough task. I think they're contenders now. (However, I wasn't so sure about them deciding to use their shoe to scoop water for someone's well!)
I wasn't sad to see the cheerleaders go.
Enjoy-la!

I must say that I like Team Kentucky. I like how they're honest about never meeting Asians and gays and that they are totally open to the experience.
I was really turned off by Peter and Sarah using her disability by doing cheap tricks to get money. I thought it was so demeaning.
I still don't have a favorite but so far I like the most: Tom and Terry (partners) and Duke and Lauren (father/daughter).

I watched last night with people who have never seen the show before, so I'm afraid my dislike for Peter may have come across as a little over the top. Oops.
I'm not a big fan of Sarah's either, but when Peter was yelling at her during the water-gathering task, I was in full agreement with her demand of "Stop lecturing me!" They have a very strange dynamic, IMO. What's up with "recently dating," anyway?
Meanwhile, I agree about the beauty queens. I thought they focused on their titles a bit much early on, but they don't complain, I'll give them that.

Yeah, I forgot to mention that Team Kentucky is a hoot - never met Asians or gays before but being cool with it. In my little world, I can't believe someone hasn't met Asians or gays before...LOL!!
I also like the way teams seem to get along better this series rather than just scheming. Saw a bit of that when the models had their flat tire, but when they were waiting for their bus, they were all together hanging out.
Enjoy-la!

Team Kentucky is great. Every time I see them I think back to their first episode narrative when she said she didn’t think he’d ever consider her because he was so good looking and he made an equally endearing statement about her. I just think they are so sweet. Loved her comment last night that they’d never been around gay people and “I like them!” The look on her face was precious.
I’m so over Sarah and Peter. I thought I would like them but the “entertainment” for the locals and then the plea for money was so gross. They should be ashamed of themselves for their exploitation. Then they were so crazy at the challenge they couldn’t finish anything.
Kimberly and Can’t remember his name do nothing for me. They argue about the dumbest stuff.
I was surprised that another team was cut already. We’re down to 9 after only 2 shows. Wow they are going fast.
I swear I would not have been able to hit the target with the flaming arrow. I was truly amazed that each group was able to do it – oh except for the last place cheerleaders. DH laughed because when they started it was light out and when they quit it was dark. More proof that they need to say how long some of the challenges and detours need take.

i enjoyed the episode. the one thing that jumped out at me that i was disappointed in was when they gave the 1st place team their prize and commented that the trip included "swimming with dolphins". it is a horrible, horrible way to treat these fine creatures and i was sad that this was part of their "prize". cbs should be ashamed of including this.
otherwise, love the show.

This is the first time I've watched the show, and the only reason we did was because my aunt called to say they were in Mongolia. My husband is from Ulanbator, Mongolia so it was interesting to see the show from that perspective. Mongolian people will give you the shirt off their back so it's no surprise they were so nice and helpful.
As for the contestants - seems like a lot of whiners to me, but I only watched it for a half an hour last night. Maybe I'll tune in again next week to see what happens...

travel_addict, have you been to Mongolia?! I have wanted to go there since seeing an exhibit on it in Houston several years ago--I am fascinated by the people and their culture. It's on my list of places to experience before I croak, lol.

I didn't get home in time for the first 15 minutes, so I didn't see the tricks and asking for money that you are talking about.
Later in the show, I decided that Peter is too nice a guy to end up with Sarah. I didn't see it as him lecturing, I saw it as Sarah losing it, and Peter trying to help her.

(sorry to hi-jack the thread...)
AnnMarie_C, I haven't been to Mongolia yet but we're planning on going next summer. The airfare is really expensive (almost $5000 for the 2 of us) so this will be my first trip to meet the in-laws. DH is pretty excited as he hasn't seen his family in 3 years!
He's been trying to teach me Mongolian, as his family doesn't speak any English, but it seems to be a lost cause! It's a very difficult language to learn - after 3 years, all I can say is Hello, how are you?, yes/no, thank you, happy birthday, goodbye, I love you, and no meat (have to learn that in every language as a vegetarian!). Pathetic!
Amazingly enough, in our small midwestern town of Grand Rapids, MI, we have 7 Mongolians living here. When my DH first moved here, a friend of a friend knew one of them and gave them our number. This Mongolian woman called our house one day out of the blue and said (in broken English), "You have Mongolian living there, please come over."
We now know them quite well (& their English has improved!) and they are the sweetest people on earth. You can never bring anything over to their house or help clean up as it's insulting to them. And they will do anything for you. My DH says that if you are out in the countryside in Mongolia and knock on the door of a ger (home), they will invite you in & let you stay! That would NEVER happen here.
If you want to see lots of the Mongolian countryside and culture, go rent The Story of the Weeping Camel. (I rented it at Blockbuster so it's not too obscure.) It's a sweet story about a baby camel whose mother won't feed him, and the locals decide to play music for the mother in order to help. It's based on an ancient folk story and offers some amazing scenery.
Ok, back to the Amazing Race...

I can't ever watch TV on Sundays and don't watch tapes- never have time. But I'm enjoying reading about the places visited.
I've heard about Mongolian hospitality before, travel addict. When you do get there, keep a journal- I would LOVE to read it.

travel_addict,
Don't feel you're crashing the party! I too was impressed with the scenery of Mongolia.
Thx a mint for sharing that movie title. I've started watching a lot of foreign indie films in the past year or so and am always looking for good titles. I know there must be "a list" out there but I can barely keep up as it is. I just looked up some reviews on The Weeping Camel and have added it to my list!
Enjoy-la!

Just ordered the movie from Amazon since I also was taken by scenery in this episode.
So far the Beauty Queens are my faves. They were so kind to one another when the one lost her helmet. No accusations or yelling, by the one who was likely to be eliminated by the mistake - just a hug for her friend.

travel_addict,
I am so excited for you! You will be fine with the language you've learned so far...particularly the "I love you" and "no meat" statements should prove fruitful, lol. Yours is the one trip report I will anxiously await! Thanks for the movie rec and now back to our scheduled program...
Go, team Kentucky!

The beauty queens (I can't remember anyone's name this early in the show) are emerging as one of the teams I am rooting for. They seem to work well together and are good at staying positive and not losing their cool. Even with that thing with the helmet.
The father and daughter seem pretty cool too.
I am still not sure about the team from Kentucky. On the one hand I think they are neat, but on the other, they do bicker quite a lot and I have a low tolerance for that stuff.
