Amazing Chihuly blown glass exhibit at the Dallas Arboretum

The Chihuly blown glass installations at the Dallas Arboretum are amazing! If you have an opportunity to tour the beautiful 60 plus acre garden between now and November, you'll have an experience to remember: http://www.dallasarboretum.org/chihuly/index.htm
There are many wonderful photographs online if you google Chihuly and Dallas Arboretum. Our visit was during daylight hours over the Memorial Day weekend, but there are also evening hours when the glass is illuminated. I can't imagine how beautiful it might be at night.

I was there in December and even though it was pretty much low season, I could tell it was a spectacular place to visit in season. Seeing Chihuly glass would make it over the top grand. Saw lots of it at The Atlantis when it opened and in musuems since; it's wonderful.

I saw his work at an exhibit at the MFA (Boston) and it was amazing. Would love to see it at the Arboretum.

I will be seeing it at the Arboretum for sure sometime this summer. There is a permanent installation in downtown St Pete, well worth a visit too.

The best time to visit the Arboretum, IMHO, is during Dallas Blooms in the spring, Debit. It's incredibly beautiful!

I would love to see it. I saw a small exhibit at the Foothills Art Center in Golden, CO a couple of weeks ago. I feel in love with the putti and was amazed how one could be so "easily" created out of a formless piece of molten glass.

I first saw his work at the Oregon State Aquarium and when I found this exhibit online immediately recognized his art. I especially love the works that include water in some form and there are several variations here. This was our first excursion to the Arboretum, but now that we've seen it, we'll certainly return!

OO, the gift shop has a video of Chihuly at work and lots of beautiful books featuring his amazing work. Enjoy your visit!

I saw it in Dallas at night during a concert in early May. Amazing!

Question - what do you think the Arboretum does to protect the glass when it hails? It hailed at my house last week without warning. We have fierce storms in Dallas, and it seems something will get broken.

That's a great question. I wondered about it,too. Anyone have an answer for us?

Saige, Isn't the Arboretum beautiful? It's becoming more child friendly too, we noticed on our last visit (grandchildren in tow). I don't know how far you live from it, but it wasn't easy to get to even when we lived there! Still, well worth it, and if you go for nothing else, be sure to go for Dallas Blooms in the spring. Awesome!

Thanks for the tip on the gift shop. Who doesnt need more coffee table books? :) Have seen one video of his glass blowing when the tour came to St Pete prior to the permanent installation. I was surprised to see him with an eyepatch, and evidently unrelated to his profession!

Good question about hail! Hopefully that is over for this year.

OO, we live between Austin and Dallas/Fort Worth. I want my granddaughter to see the Arboretum! I love the small scale Monet's cottage, and bridge. And the frog fountain, too. So much to enjoy and not too far from home. We'll have to plan a trip for Dallas Blooms. Thanks for posting about that!

Sadly, some parts of the exhibit were damaged in today's hail storms.

I know tennis ball size hail was in Lakewood yesterday. It is pretty impressive that only 6 received "minor damage.". Apparently, the sculptures are known for their strength. Before I read the article, I would have assumed they were shattered to pieces.

jcb, Thanks for posting that link! I'm so glad there was not more extensive damage.

OMG! My son just sent me a picture of hail so deep it looked like snow. I immediately thought of the collection, and sure enough, there was some damage, just as you all had worried could happen! It could have been SO much worse though!! They were so lucky.
