When we stayed on the Big Island a while back, An FAA inspector in our concierge room said that he would never fly in any of the tour helicoptors and recounted the time when the FAA came in and grounded them all. Problems included poor maintainance records, etc. The conceirge staffer said that she thought the tourists were "really brave" because she would never fly in them. Her father in on the police force and often has to fly in helicoptors as part of his job and he feels that its very dangerous due to the wind currents.

If you check the statistics you will find that neither Aloha or Hawaiian have amazing or impeccable safety records. While both have low fatalities rates (Hawaiian is zero) they both have a higher than average rate of near mid-air collissions.

Rusty, the record I care about is the accidents/fatalities one, and they are both outstanding in that regard. There are near-misses with airlines everyday............ more than we want to know.

We can all look up NTSB stats, and I don't consider you their spokesman. What I care about is whether an airline's planes are landing safely or not, and these Hawaiian carriers are. And yes, I consider Hawaiian's record to be impeccable....... they have not had one fatality in all the years they've been flying. That's good enough for me.

Well, bonniebroad, that tells me that the law of averages is against me and that they are due for a mishap. No one can predict wind shear or any other millions of thing that might cause an 'accident', and when you factor in human error I don't know anyone can say that one airline is safer than another, maintenance issues aside.

It's just the luck of the draw, the same as each time I venture out on the highway, or go surfing. If I spent all my time worrying about what might be, I'd never leave home!

Here Today, wait!!! I'm not saying one airline is much better than another, or anything of the sort! I was just saying I think these two airlines have great safety records, period! That is all I mean to say........ I am not trying to encourage/discourage anyone from doing anything. I say, do what you want, have fun, normal life's a risk. We were all just discussing what we've heard, read, yadda yadda.......... no big thing!

Hawaiian Air has a zero fatality record for the last five years. However, they have not been fatality free since they started flying. You can look it up.

And near mid air collisions don't bother me a bit either as long as I get where I am going. What's difference does a near collision now and then make ?

Sorry everyone. I didn't mean to cause such a stir. I only wanted to let people know that if standing in lines/getting to the airport early/waiting for your bags to come around the baggage claim and you DON'T mind the small plane type flying - I had found a reasonably priced alternative. There must be tons of people who aren't worried about this type of flying as there are so many tours each day. I was speaking mostly to those people.

Everyone has their fears and boundaries of comfort. Lets all respect each other's differences. That's what makes the world go round.

Goodness, Nancy, don't give it a thought! We're all *big people*..... No need for anyone to take every comment too seriously...... we're just tossing out thoughts and opinions, and most people on here enjoy the give and take, without getting overwrought. Everything's cool.........

Rusty, if Hawaiian has had a fatality in their 70-some year history, then a lot of newspaper & guide books writers are lying about them.... I've never read anything other than that their safety record is perfect. If you know otherwise, please share....... I haven't heard it!
