Alternative route from Vernal Utah to Moab....which to take?
Our choices are: driving east into to Colorado and south on 64 and then 139 to 70, and then west, etc. OR west to 191 and south to 70, and then east, etc.
I know highway 139 is scenic, but it goes over Douglas Pass -- is this a possible problem at the end of May? Any insights would be appreciated. Thanks!

It's been years since we did Douglas Pass going from Vernal to Moab. A couple years ago we did Hwy 191 & 6 going from Vernal to Moab. I thought 191 was a nice drive. Douglas Pass might be a lower pass, but it's a got a much steeper grade from what I remember.

Hi there,
I would opt for the Douglas Pass route. We live in Grand Junction and have driven it several times just for a different ride when we have cabin fever. It is a little steep in a couple of places, but it is a good road and an interesting drive. End of May is almost summer here, so wouldn't be a problem.
From there pick up I70 and then the River Road,Highway 128(exit 212) to Moab along the Colorado River--a great ride full of unusual scenery.
