Alternate plan suggestions for active people if the coast is messy?
Hi - two 50's couples who like to do moderate hikes, kayak and generally explore doing a coastal trip from San Francisco down to around Morro Bay. Then back up to San Francisco for a couple of days before we leave. I have all our stays done (thanks to the info here!) and some of the other details for our time down the coast, but like to have alternate ideas ready in case the coast is bad. We are going in mid April.
Am I right that lots of times when the coast is lousy a little inland is nice? Any ideas for active types like us would be much appreciated. We don't want to drive way out of our way but don't mind an hour or so inland. Maybe other hiking areas? or alternate scenic driving? THANKS. sue

Not in the way you probably mean. If there is a storm along the coast, that same storm will also almost always hit inland. And in April the chances are you'll have good weather anyway. Of course thare can be Spring storms, but by mid/late April we are usually already into the looooong dry season.
(when your statement IS often true is in the summer when it can be cold and fogged in on the coast and warm/hot just a few miles inland)

Just wanted to throw in that there are lots of hikes and great scenery NORTH of San Francisco, too...and over to Lake Tahoe is an option if the coast is foggy. But I agree that April is almost always good weather so think positive!

Tahoe and the rest of the higher elevations of the Sierra Nevada will stil be deep in snow in April. The coast is generally clear, it's summer fog that makes the coast "messy" and is escapable by going inland. In April, the coast is in full springtime mode, green grassy hillsides with wild flowers, where it's dry and brown in summer and fall.
Between Monterey/Carmel and San Luis Obispo, there really is no way to get inland from the coast. Near Monterey, you might try Jack's Peak County Park, it has a view of Monterey Bay from high above.

North of San Francisco there is Point Reyes with many hiking trails.
There actually is a road between the coast and Mission San Antonio, but I would not recommend it in bad weather or foggy weather, and would not recommend it for anyone who is afraid of narrow twisty little roads.
