Alternate Hotel to HILTON Key West?
I'm booked in January at the Hilton Key West (first time visit), but wondering if maybe there are BETTER hotel choices? Not sure if $385 a night is really worth it....Heard that some of the "ocean" view rooms (which I booked) are blocked by cruise ships at the Hilton.... We really want to stay close to all the action and within walking distance to Duval St. Any suggestions?

Even though I haven't stayed there, the Marquesa Hotel seems to get the best reviews on this forum.

The Marquesa and the Hilton are two totally opposite properties, and while the Marquesa is certainly wonderful, it is not close to the action. It is tucked back in a quiet neighborhood and requires a bit of a walk.
(But, if you don't mind that, I agree it is a top choice; though not for people who want more of a chain hotel feel as opposed to a more boutique style feel.) |
Not really Marquesa is only 2 blocks from DUVAL (action) . It is right on Flemmings street. It is a beautiful property and the restaurant adjecent to it is one of the best in KW. There is also the Marriott in old town. There are lots of charming small hotels in old town . Look for hotels in www.keywest.com

KW is super safe, so walking at any time is not an issue at all. In January it is nice to walk old town and see all the charming houses/hotels and the tropical vegetation..

If you'd like to be on the Gulf, which is the center of Key West "action" you should consider the Ocean Key Resort - which is next to the Hilton but not blocked by cruise ships - or the Hyatt on Front Street. There are other Hyatt properties, but they're not in good locations.
Susie is right about the Marquesa...it gets wonderful reviews and is close to the Gulf. |
I have stayed all over Old Town and to be perfectly honest,EVERYTHING is within walking distance. The Marquesa is very near "the action". The furtherest I've ever stayed was The Reach and even there I didn't have a problem.

We have stayed at the Ocean Key Resort. I cannot say enough GOOD things about this hotel. The room was beautiful, our balcony overlooked Mallory Square, the pool overlooks the water and it is near everything. The staff was extremely friendly and accommodating - we were stranded in Atlanta due to bad weather and were a day late arriving.
I saw on the internet somewhere this week - a special at this resort. I think it was either Travelzoo or one of the airlines web sites. I would call the hotel directly and ask about specials. I know there is some construction going on right now and the prices may be lower. Enjoy your trip. When we were there in January two years ago we experienced record breaking cold. However, it was still a lot warmer than home! Enjoy! |
We were at the Ocean Key last Dec. and LOVED it.We had a special that included breakfast each morning, and 2 cocktails each day. Rooms were fantastic. They were spacious and colorful and included a large jacuzzi tub in the bedroom. There are a few size rooms to choose from including a jr. suite or a 1 bedroom suite. Location can't be beat.

I love the Marquesa and it is very close the the action.
If you want to be on the water, my first choice would the the Hyatt. I also love the Heron House and The Gardens. |
We stayed at the Key West Harbor Inn listed above. Our room was small but exceptionaly clean and breakfast around the pool and beautiful grounds is very good. They also had a free cocktail hour from 5-6 every day that was wonderful and then it is just a few minutes walk to sunset celebration at Mallory Square.

We have stayed at the Hilton two years in a row and have had just wonderful experiences. The big cruise ships do dock in front of some of the rooms, but they aren't there all the time and when they are they are really interesting. There are some rooms (not many) that have fully blocked views but if you tell the desk that this concerns you I am sure they will be accomodating. The Hilton has a fantastic location the rooms are pretty and clean. If you want someplace small and quiet check out www.weatherstationinn.com. It is right down the street in Truman Annex. We stopped in and viewed it a couple of weeks ago. As long as they have room for us, I'll go to the Hilton.
