If your able to travel outside of Philadelphia, West Chester area is a great place to hang out on the weekends.
Great restaurants.. |
He needs to take the R1 train from the airport, it will arrive at a commuter rail about 7 blocks north of your hotel. It runs about every half hour, it is about a 25 minute ride. Maybe someone else can give the name of the arrival station, I think it is suburban station but I am not sure.

Taking the R1 from the airport, he would get off at the Suburban Station. He can either walk about 6 blocks to the Doubletree, or transfer underground to the Broad St. line, taking the subway 1 stop south (extra fare). Or take a taxi, about 1/2 mile.((*))

thanks everyone. will forward that info to him. like me, he likes to walk and i believe he's not taking much luggage so that should be cool.
no wyeth tickets today but I actually made it there - took the 32 bus - wow, haven't taken the bus in forever. So will come back sometime this week - maybe the weekend with my honey. Made it to Rodin instead and took the bus back to market street and 15th then walked to reading terminal to get some thai food to go (having an early night, I'm beat) but before doing so, walked up market all the way to 5th, turned around and headed back via chestnut first then walnut. I love this walking city! Which part of market or walnut has more stores? east or west of broad street? I've been only as far as 5th street on one side and 16th street.... Thanks, M |
Be sure to walk across the street and go inside the Kimmel Center, the new home of the orchestra.
There are more and better stores and restaurants on Chestnut St going west. Go to 18th st, then south to Rittenhouse Square, then back by Walnut St. ((F)) |
Jed, was in Kimmel Sunday and took TONS of pictures. What a beautiful building. Went up to the garden terrace too - besides it being beautiful, it was amazing how hot it was up there. What do they do for special events there or are there none during summer?
Thanks for the advice on where for shopping. Will do that tomorrow after the conference. Many thanks! |
My husband and I found this great place. We LOVE Belgian beer and apparently the food there is very good too, however, we never got around to eating there.
Anyway, it was really fun and friendly. I think you would find someone to chat with at the bar... http://www.monkscafe.com/ |
You must visit the Eastern State Penitentiary, near the art museum. It doesn't sound like much, but my family and I had the best time there. You can take a tour; the ruins are intriguing. There are great neighborhood restaurants too.

Tango, that sounds like a fun place to have a drink after a late dinner on Thurday, thanks!
Angelize, hmmm, sounds interesting. I'll see what he says but thanks for responding! MM |
<What do they do for special events there or are there none during summer?>
Indeed, the Kimmel Center is mostly abandoned for the summer. The orchestra plays at an outdoor venue, the Mann Center, in the western part of Fairmont Park. Unfortunately, it is also subject to oppressively hot weather. <Where can I get an original Philly cheese steak sandwhich?> At Pat's or Gino's in south Philly. Gino's has become famous (or infamous) in the past 2 weeks. Just ask any Philladelphian, and get ready for an argument.((#)) |
Maria, Monk's Cafe is known for moules and frites, and has good burgers too. Up from your hotel on Walnut St. is Brasserie Perrier - I've heard they have a happy hour on Thursdays from 7 -9 and pour house wine for $4 a glass. They also have an excellent burger and steak frites.
Make sure you check out DiBruno Brothers and Capogiro Gelato on 20th St off Rittenhouse Square - you won't be sorry! |
I just saw that the Kimmel Center is having its annual Summer Solstice celebration starting at 11Am Saturday.

This thread has been so good that I'm thinking of going to Philly! Thank you all.
I was stationed at the Navy base in 1972, but back then only cared where the good bars were. 'Twas my loss. Where's the BEST place for SCRAPPLE? (only kidding) |
Rb - You have to do Philly some day. Its a great town. I have even found a place that serves grits. For scrapple in Williamsburg go to the Colonial Pancake House next to the Quality Inn Colony.
