Aloha shirt tucked in or not ?

Is there proper protocol for wearing an Aloha shirt? Should it be tucked in your pants or worn outside ?

Depends, if you have a really snazzy white belt that you want to match to your white bucks, then definately in. Otherwise wear them out.

While I'm sure Ryan's "snazzy white belt" accentuates every man's must have "white bucks," there is only one right answer. -Out!

It depends on where you are going...if you are dressing up -nice restaraunt, business meeting, or your wife is in a dress and heels- tuck it in. If you are in baggy shorts at the beach or sightseeing you can leave it out. Most men in Hawaii tuck them in.

Usually, as lcuy says, you tuck it in for more formal situations like business meetings. Wearing it out means you are headed for a casual event.

MelissaHi,
Aloha shirt for formal situations...NEVER!!!

Rusty, if you wanna look smart, wear Tommy Bahamas tucked in. Otherwise, leave those Aloha shirts out!!!

It doesn't really matter. If you find nearly everyone else doing otherwise, wherever you happen to be, you can always do likewise. If you'll be tucking, be sure to be wearing a nice belt, though.

wow, an aloha shirt war! i'm enjoying this.

melissa and lcuy are right--aloha shirts in for formal occasions. i used to attend an annual luncheon for the top 250 ceos in the state, and most came in aloha shirts. anything more formal, like shirt and tie -- or even more conspicuous, a jacket! -- marks u as a mainlander, an asian, a legislator or a lawyer.

Who knew that the words "formal and aloha shirt" could be used in the same sentance.

Of course now I'm curious, when someone dies and is buried in an aloha shirt, does it get tucked in or out?

Ryan--FUNNY!

Rusty, I'm assuming you belong to Clark and Ellen, in which case the shirt goes out.

I'm certainly nowhere near cool, but my 14 year old (who is cool--just ask) and his friends wear theirs out--no doubt. For what it's worth, hubby wears his aloha shirt out, too

If you're wearing something as tacky as a Hawaiian shirt...does it really matter? It's like saying, "What's more appropriate - wearing a fanny pack on the front or on the side?"

I hope you realize that in Hawai'i, Aloha shirts are not "tacky." They are standard daily business attire, worn with slacks and belt.

Yes - in for dress, out for play. Very simple.

SUZANNE
Do you tuck your shirt under the fanny pack?

What does one do when the occassion is semi-formal? Wear one side in and one-side out.

You're way out in left field on that comment Suzanne.
You must understand that while "Hawaiian shirts" were considered tacky on the mainland in the 1980's and 1990's (and they're no longer considered tacky, but trendy today), in Hawaii itself such shirts have long held a position of cultural significance.
Not unlike Bermuda shorts in Bermuda. In the 1980's Bermuda shorts in the US were considered out of fashion. In Bermuda they are a cultural symbol and they are even wore with a blazer and tie at times.

....that would be even "worn", of course.
