Aloha Kauai Backroads Tour
 

Has anyone taken this tour? According to the discription: you will be behind locked gates using four wheel drive vans and former cane roads, this tour gives you exclusive access to the off limits area of the 22,000 acre Grove Farm Plantation. This is a photographers dream come true. From the top of Kilohana Crater you will have a breathtaking 360 degree panorama. You will tour through Koloa to the rugged coastline of Maha'ulepu and then, one of the highlights of the tour will take you through the tunnel back to Kilohana.

This tour is 4 hours and there is another tour that is approx 8 hours that you will visit Waimea Canyon and the eco system of Kokee. My question for those who are Kauai experts, do you think this is something worth seeing? We will be renting a car, should we just drive to these areas our selves or would the van go places that we are not able to access with our rental cars?

We've done it -- loved it, but would not advise it for folks with back/neck problems. The 4WD vehicles manage the terrain, but it is definitely _not_ a smoothe ride at all times.

Being able to access private lands is a real treat, especially for this island resident who could never do it otherwise. And no, you cannot access Kilohana Crater or the tunnel to Koloa or many of their other points, on your own. 75-80% of the tour, is accessed through locked gates.

Thanks for the info regarding the tour, I don't have back or neck problems but I do get some motion sickness. It's not too bad in that I am able to fly the big airplanes without taking Dramamine but if there is a lot of turbulence then I generally pop a pill. Last September while on Kona I took one of the small planes ( I think it sat 10 people?) and I took Dramamine before the flight. It was a good thing because we were constantly dipping from side to side and the winds were rough around the volcano. How rough is the ride? Would you recommend taking Dramamine before I go?

If motion sickness is a possibility, some preventative measure (ginger tablets, Bonine, or one of those wristband gizmos) wouldn't hurt.

Problem with Dramamine is that darned drowsiness -- which the aforementioned, don't do.
