All things Elvis
Planning a trip to Graceland and would like to do a daytrip to Tupelo, Mississippi. Has anyone done this?
|
Do you mean Tunica or Tupelo? Tunica is the gambling place that's about a 30 minute drive from downtown Memphis. Tupelo is a couple of hours away.

Used to live in Tupelo in the early 80s; if I remember correctly, Memphis is about 2.5 hours away- not a bad drive. If you're an Elvis fan, do plan to see Elvis' birthplace. It is a very tiny house; hard to imagine that it all began in that humble home. There's a small chapel next door- it was interesting to see the guestbook and the number of international visitors. Don't know if other items have been added to the area or not. For a fan, seeing both the birthplace and Graceland gives a real perspective of Elvis and his life.

Don't go unless thats all you want to see (birthplace) Tupelo has some other "elvis" places all around that he has been at, family, etc. I believ there's a brochure/map you can follow. The Natchez Trace runs through Tupelo. It;s a do-able daytrip

Tupelo is 90 miles from Memphis, the birthplace is an interesting place and Tupelo is a great small town. Tupelo Hardware is where Elvis's first guitar was bought. They have directions to all of these places at the chapel, and I would think almost anyone in town could give fairly accurate directions. The 2nd Elvis Festival was a couple of weeks ago so we've had alot of newspaper coverage on this. There are lots of very small towns along the way from Memphis to Tupelo that you could stop in Holly Springs has great Antebellum homes and I think New Albany does also. While you are in Memphis, make sure to go to Beale Street and the Peabody Hotel, Libertyland is also supposed to have been one of Elvis's favorite places. It is a small theme park, that he would rent for his friends. Hope you have fun!!

You didn't mention where you are staying while in Memphis. I am a native, and feel obligated to caution you not to stay in the neighborhood where Graceland is located. Instead you may choose to stay downtown. There is so much going on there now, with the opening of Peabody Place, and Beale Street is essential for the "Memphis feel".

Do not go to Tupelo unless you are a die hard Elvis fan beacuse it sucks! First of all that part of town is not very nice and second of all the location of his house is not the origianal location and the house is about a five minute tour due to the fact that it's very small! In my opinion it's not worth the trip
